     I have a permanent ileo and my husband picked up a bottle of Walgreen's Arthritis pain reliever for me today.  It says "time released".  Will these dissolve in my stomach or come out whole in my bag?

christine. I have had several doctors tell me to avoid extended and/or time release capsules. I think its not just the capsule coming out into the ileostomy, I think it is how the drug would end up being released into our bodies.

Your body dissolves part of an extended release pill in the small intestine and part in the colon. You don't get full benefit.

What they said. Extended release or time release pills will not get fully dissolved, digested, or absorbed for those of us with no colons, so they will not work well for you. It probably won't come out *completely* whole, but you might see a chunk of it come out.

And if I understand correctly, for anyone with recent surgery who is still dealing with any swelling, undigested pills could cause a bit more of a risk for a blockage, depending on how big the pills are. (Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that part, folks.)

I received melatonin I'd ordered as extended release, without noticing that detail when I placed the order. Given that it is not a pain-reliever, I saw no problem with putting it in a plastic bag, smashing it with the bottom of the expresso pot and swallowing the pieces with water. I may not be getting full-effect for 8 hours of sleep, but I'd get waken up in the night by my jpouch anyway.

Smashing a ER will give you the whole dose at once. If it's a large dose you could be taking too much.

     Thanks...geez seven bucks down the **** shoot..lol.  Oh well.  Better be safe than sorry.  The reason I was concerned about them coming out whole in my bag is the fact that I was given potassium pills in a local hospital a few months after my operation and they came out whole in my bag.  Let me tell ya, they looked like horse pills!!  I was hospitalized for dehydration and my potassium level must have been very low.  Dr. Fry must have created a fantastic stoma because those babies could have clogged my sewer pipe (just exagerating a bit).  Thank GOD they both came out with no problem.  When I told the nurse they would have to give me an IV drip with the potassium, what did she do?  She came back into my room with not two but FOUR potassium pills!! OY.  This is one reason I chose a Philly hospital.
