Stoma placement- always above belt line? Or just never on belt line?

I consulted with a stoma nurse during my recent, third surgery consult in 5 years and, if my memory serves, she said that for trim, fit people like myself it is now common for stomas to be placed *below* (?!) the beltline? But I also recall the surgeon saying in his consult that it is always *above* the beltline. So i was confused.

The notion of a stoma and stoma bag being entirely below the beltline of most of my pants rocks aesthetically, but how would a bag fill up ok under a pair of tight jeans say? Does one basically have to move up an inch or two in pant size to allow it to expand and tnus be condemned to baggy lookign pants? These are perhaps very basic and no doubt dumb questions and I will re-ask them again in any pre-op stoma consult but just wondering what the consensus is in case I misinterpeted something.

Why don't you stick a wafer and pouch on your abdomen to see how it will work. You could put a small amount of water in it also. Leave it there for a day or so. Should give you all the answers.

Mine is below the beltline. I think it is a combination of the type of ileo you are receiving (i.e. an end ileo versus a loop ileo, which I think is typically placed higher) and your particular musculature.

I personally have been having issues with pants being a bit too tight and constricting flow. However, my pants are too tight in general (need to lose weight!). I do wear yoga pants at home and it doesn't bulge a whole lot UNLESS you let it fill up quite a bit.

Mine is below the belt line. Wearing tight clothes won't cause a problem you will just need to empty a little more often. Like today I had on skinny jeans and while I usually would go 4 or 5 hours without emptying, i emptied after 2. I do the same with tights or things like that. I think that baggy clothes are worse cause then my bag flops around and i HATE that. The only time I don't like my bag is when it touches my leg and flops around, lol.
Putting a bag on in a sample spot is a good idea. You could use applesauce or oatmeal also, they are more like the consistency you will probably have.

As you walk, no. Haven't run with liquid stool yet but I doubt you would hear it.

If you try and run with it filled with liquid even a third of the way, it will be super annoying. Just empty before you run. I always empty before I work out. Unless you ate a huge meal a few hours ago or drank a smoothie in the hour before working out, then your bag should be pretty ok. Now if you are training for a half or whole marathon you probably want to plan a bathroom break in there.
