Update: surgery consult

I had my surgical consult today and am just waiting for scheduling to confirm - part 1 of 3 step surgery will be next Thursday! I loved the surgeon (who did her fellowship at Cleveland Clinic Florida) and she said I seem as mentally prepared as any patient she has seen. The high dose of Pred I am currently taking is what is forcing me to 3 steps, but she said all of my tests and exams indicate that I should have a successful outcome. I feel in control just knowing I'm getting started! A bit scared, but ready. Will be meeting with the osteomyelitis nurse on Wednesdy, and I'm sure it will feel very real then ...

Good luck! Be sure that you wear your everyday clothes to your marking on wed. You can even ask the nurse to let you wear a sample bag on the spot to make sure it's in a good spot. Its very important to have your stoma in a good spot!

Hey Alison, that's great that you found a surgeon you like. I had a quick turnaround from consult to surgery too, only eight days. When you're ready you're ready!

I'm having three steps too because I was on prednisone and Remicade when I started -- I was at 30 mg the day of surgery but had been trying to taper down from 60 mg for two months prior. I'm definitely envious of people who can get it all done in two steps but knowing this is for the rest of my life I want to get it right :)

With beig in such a great state of mind, I hate to rain on your parade...
BUT, please be aware that no matter how mentally prepared you are for this, you may still feel anxiety or depression after your surgery..
I was great prior too... but after I kept getting anxiety attacks adn stuff.. It was odd.. I was more than ready for surgery..doc couldn't figure out why either, he said sometimes it is just a reaction to anestetic, and it would all be ok. He was right, of course,but you need to be prepared for what could happen too!
