No such luck!

Hi Everyone,
I got an ileostomy on 15th July, and still i have been passing blood and mucus via the rear end, I thought nothing would be passing via the rear end after surgery, my luck I now go pee, empty my bag & sit and pass mucus /Blood

Is this normal? and if so is it permenant?

I havent had my pathology report/follow up appointment yet, long time since surgery too! Good old NHS for you!

Generally, yes, it is very normal. Everyone passes mucus anally after a collectomy. Part of the rectum is still there, and it produces mucus all the time. Most people pass a little blood as well, there might be inflamation in the rectum. Mucus could also have an unpleasant odor, it doesn't mean there is an infection. Mine did not smell good. It was white, grey, and sometimes even slightly green. Green could mean an infection, but I did not have an infection when I had green mucus.

Do you have a j-pouch yet, or do you still have your whole rectum? Either way, unless you had an anal closure, it is normal to pass mucus with a little blood! If you have any "incontinence" with the mucus, don't worry -- also very normal. It's much harder to "hold" pure mucus than actual stool, even liquid stool.

This happened to me too after my colectomy and my surgeon said it was Normal but he did give me antibiotics to help dry it out as much as possible before I had my rectum out and prevent infection.
