1)Did it take long to find out which system worked best for you?
The very first "system" that I was given was Hollister 2 piece and it works like a charm for me. However, in the beginning I was also dealing with a re-
opened incision next to my stoma that was a bit more work due to thebclose proximity. With that healed, changes became a snap and leaks have been non-existent.
2)Why did you personally choose an end ileostomy? (I have some family members that are grossed out/annoyed that I would choose that over j-pouch)
I happened to get ny end ileo as step 1 of a 3 step pouch, and loved the results of step 1 such that I decuded to quit there-
I had/have no interest in the risks and downtime involved with additional major surgeries- but more than that, I cannot tell you how fantastic it is to never ever have to worry about
holding it in. I can literalky wait for a few HOURS Beyind the oointnwhere I would normally emoty my bag, even if it is filling up due to lots of food... I realize that typical good jpouch outcomes reault in no urgency, but that is not always the case and I never ever wanted to have to worry about
getting to the bathroom at an inopportune time. I can eat a bug meal and goolaytennis or do whatever for hours with my ileo- it rocks. And if need be I could just swap out my bag in second without emptying it, if emotying wasn,t convenient (not really an issue for me but if I decidento go mountain climbing like Blueheron then pooping isnt an option).
3)How long was your hospital stay?
Initially 3 days but I got redmitted for ileus a few days later and ended up another week stay.
4) After you came home, did you stick to soups and such?
I was eating a fairly normal diet once home but for confidence started off with soft food.
5)Have you found clothing to be an issue? I was looking at the maternity bands since they said my stoma will need to be a bit higher because of my previous panni removal scar. It will be above the waistline of most of my jeans since they are low rise.
My stoma is at my lower waist pamts waistline and below my work pants waistline. There are various technical solutionsmfor high stomas, but I am a male so I'll leave it for female ostomates to advise you.
6) Can I just wear a long tank to cover instead of tucking it into my pants?
See my comment above.
7) I know you can get samples from several companies, but should I wait until after my surgery? If not, what information do I put for all of those questions on the websites?!
I personallybthink you can wait- the is no neednto fuss with different systems when you avjustbout if the hospital. IMO it's best tonstart offwith whatever system they give you and then later experiment.
8) Did you have arthritis and did it subside a bit after surgery?
Not really.. i have some aches and pains but dont realky cinsidervthem arthritis. Inconsequential vs UC. Being off pred: priceless.
9)My biggest thing is feeling trapped to a toilet....is it completely amazing to go and do again?! lol
It is, it truly is! But the first 6 weeks or so after surgery, esp the first 2-3 weeks, are a bit volatile as the surgical inflammation of the intestines settles down and the new olumbing adjusts. Also , your abdomen and stoma will be heavily swollen at first. My "prego bump" (on a male lol) around my incisions was still reducing 4-5 months after.
Best of luck!
