son has wafer allergy, any suggestions?

Hello,

My 13 yo son has had an ileostomy since last December (severe Crohn's). We have tried just about every product out there that I know of. He seems to have developed an allergy to all of them, Hollister is the most severe. I was wondering if any of you all have had this issue and what worked for you. We have a new ostomy nurse we are working with since we have relocated. She is suggesting NuHope's non adhesive system but it seems to be geared toward use on adults only. Although he is 13, he is about the size of a 10 yr. She is supposed to talk to someone at Nuhope to determine if this is an option worth trying.

We had a previous ostomy nurse suggest using Mepilex as a barrier between the wafer and skin. Has anyone tried this before? I tried this once before without success but I was new to ostomy care so I may have not used it correctly.

I would appreciate any help you can offer.

I'm allergic to adhesives so I use Smith Nephew Skin Barrier wipes. After washing the area and drying it thoroughly by iusing my hair blower on the low heat setting, I apply the skin barrier, dry thoroughly and then put on my wafer. I use Convatec Natura Stomahesive Flexible wafers and I get the white one...not opaque...just in case the dye would cause a problem with my skin. I do get the opaque pouches. This works for me. I've had my ostomy for nearly 25 years and have never had a skin problem. I sure hope this helps you.

If I use any one product too long then my skin starts getting mad at me. So I switch around a bit. I do find coloplast products to be the least irritating for me. So nowadays I go from assura regular wear to assura extended wear to sensura standard wear to sensura extended wear. Here lately I find the sensura extended wear to be the least irritating, in fact non-irritating really. So if you haven't tried them yet you might check out the sensura xpro line...

Oh and I do not use anything under my wafer anymore. When I used wipes, barriers, and such it seemed to make things worse rather than better.

Do you have a dermatologist in the mix? Seems worth exploring (someone w/experience w/both ostomies and w/children).

There was an article in the Phoenix (magazine from the United Ostomy Assoc of America) in the summer about custom pouches. They mentioned nu hope and also some other companies -- the Pouch place (a supply company that helps people who have trouble using regular products), the Perma-Type Co, and the Torbot Group. Some of them make reusable pouches with no adhesive.

Pelican (an Eakin company) Ultra Barrier Cream, has helped me a lot during my ostomy "career". To be honest, it can be trial and error, but take solace in the fact that may of us have had problems, and there will be a solution.

Try PDI compound tincture of benzoin swabsticks. The tincture is a first aid product that helps broken skin to heal and is a barrier between the skin and wafer. Clean the wafer area with only water and paper towel. Dry with a hair dryer. Apply the benzoin tincture. Dry again. Apply the wafer. It is waterproof. If you get it on anything only alcohol will remove it. The swabsticks are available from Edgepark....800 321 0591.

3M Cavilon No Sting Wipes can be used on the skin before the wafer or other seal is applied. You'll find the right stuff and the right process. Answers are here.
