constipation after ileostomy takedown

Hello everyone, I am sorry we all are having problems. I had an ileostomy for 6 months last year due to frequent diverticulitis and hospitalized frequently. The surgeon removed a lot of the large and small intestines. It's been a year and I don't have a bowel movement for 4-5 days, stomach gets swollen and I don't feel well. I eat good, drink water and still don't go. After the 4th or 5th day I will have a major blow out often during the night. Does anyone else have this problem?

Constipation is hard dry stool. Is that what you have?
The other possibility is a stricture, a narrowing at the surgery site, or some form of colonic inertia.
This is not normal and should be explored.

I'd get in touch with the Dr right away! I thought ileostomies resulted in only liquid stool....that's what my surgeon told me. (I have a colostomy)

Hello,

I'd get in touch with the surgeon. I also had diverticulosis, mine was rare and had pockets throughout, so all of my large is gone. I assume you have a diverted ileostomy and will have a reversal since you have some of your colon left. I also assume that the reason for your diverticulosis was because of constipation. Could be that you are still facing issues with it, despite surgery. This is not unheard of. Having the small removed, could mean something else is going on...don't know your case.

I'd check that everything is well, that your stoma and or your small isn't restricting. In the meantime, take milk of magnesia, and or Miralax. You have to get into a regime, because not having a bowel movement for so long and then having dumping issues leads to dehydration.
