Pelvic Abscess

i had my original surgery October 28th at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, i had a temp loop ileostomy and a jpouch formed. I was supposed to have my takedown surgery on January 23 but on January 10th i was admitted to my local hospital because i had intense tail bone pain and my vitals were low and my white blood cells in my stool were high, i also had pus or mucus coming from my stoma. they did a ct scan and found a pelvic abscess and put a drainage tube in my right butt cheek. i go back for another ct scan on the 29th, but right now im just worried that there was an issue with my jpouch that maybe it was leaking and also that because of this abscess that im going to lose my pouch and have the ileostomy permanently, has anyone had any experience with this.

ps. i also talked to my doctors at Mayo and they said that my surgery would be delayed 3 months because of the abscess because they want to make sure its all clear

I had the same thing happen to me but it wasn't so far out from surgery....it's was about two weeks after. I had a huge abscess in my pelvic region that ct scan found. They put in a trans gluteal drain (thru my left butt cheek) and it stayed in for 6 weeks. It drained into a bad I had to strap to my leg. Sounds like you have the same thing. They checked me every two weeks to see of it was shrinking and each time it got smaller. Finally it all healed up and they removed the drain. I was then able to go forward with my takedown surgery and I haven't had any issues since. I suppose my abscess was a direct result from the surgery. I had my colon and rectum removed and the j pouch created all at once. Yours could just be one of those set backs like mine was and hopefully your j pouch isn't leaking. Can they tell if it is? I feel your frustration....that drain in the butt cheek was just awful. Good luck with everything.

I had a permanent ileostomy but experienced 2 pelvic abscesses. This was caused as my anus was still intact (set up for a possible J-pouch later) but not in good condition. After the abscesses healed I got fistulas from the anus into the butt checks and it felt like a needling going from the inside out.

I finally had the anus stump removed at Johns Hopkins. The pathology report on the anus was not good...I had acute inflammation, ulceration, and dying cells. I guess I was no candidate for the j-pouch.
