Meds Having Little to no Effect

So ever since getting my ileostomy, I've noticed meds don't really work on me anymore. I tried percocet after surgery with no effect at all, also tried tylenol for headaches weeks after surgery and nothing. Yesterday I tried some Dayquil because I have a cold, and it went straight to the bag... I am aware that things work different when you have an ileostomy and I have a full understanding of this, I also spoke to my ostomy nurses about it, and they did say it could happen, but didn't say much else.

What i'm really wondering is, if this has happened to you, have you figured out ways around this? or should I try natural remedies for cold like symptoms and such?

Ohhh I definitely understand! I had to go on antibiotics in January for nasty bronchitis and my doctor put me on children's liquid azithromycin as the adult pill form is enteric coated and we wanted to be sure I got the correct dose. It definitely went right through me, I figured it was because it was so sweet.

Then a few weeks later I started getting a stuffed nose, cough, and thought, uh oh here we go again. I'd heard good stuff about oil of oregano, so I bought some at the local pharmacy (make sure you get the one that's ok for ingestion, there is an inhaled version) and it nipped it right in the bud!

It had me thinking about looking into more natural remedies when minor issues come up, so I'm interested in hearing what other people have tried.

Do you take your meds with food?

I don't have a problem with them as long as I eat when I take them.

@PoucherInTO - I might have to look into that oil of oregano, i've heard of it and also seen the bottles before, just never knew what it was really for.


@Equestrian Mom - I try to take my meds with food yeah, specially pills. Thankfully pills don't go through whole, but I don't feel the pills giving me any relief at all, not like before my ileostomy, when I had full use of my digestive system. I don't know, maybe I should just keep trying to take meds when i get sick so my body adapts to it.

@Deviantstoma - yes the oil of oregano has really helped me. It started to clear up my sinuses that day, and within two or three days I had zero upper respiratory symptoms. I think most of its benefits are anecdotal - not sure anything has actually been proven, but I know many people who find it quite useful. I also have oil of echinacea which I take in the winter months as well. Even if it doesn't help, I figure it can't hurt.

Also, make sure the pills you take aren't "extended release" or "enteric coated" - especially if they are via prescription and you need specific doses. With your ileo they may not be absorbed properly, or at all, so take a liquid or soft gel whenever possible.
