Best pouch system for someone who is active

Hi All,

So I'm about 3 months out from my colectomy and ostomy/stoma creation.

I am feeling very well and have been quite active. However I am having some issues with my pouch system, it doesn't seem to like an active lifestyle and has been leaking on me. Most of the leaks are created by bending over too much at the waist (to tie my shoes, pick stuff up etc....), getting in and out of my car, having my jeans ride up and knock the bag loose, etc.

Right now I am using the simple one piece Coloplast SenSura system that they gave me in the hospital, but I'm wondering if there is something better out there for me. I remember seeing a girl on Youtube who was scuba diving with her stoma/pouch. I think she had a two piece system.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a pouch system that is designed for an active life??

This will definitely be different for everyone. The most important thing is finding out what brand/set up keeps your skin the happiest. If your skin is irritated and angry, that will make you miserable all around. I think I am a pretty active person and have had my stoma for a little over a year now. Soon after getting out of the hospital, I switched to a 2 piece system and I love it!! The only problems I have with leaks are in no way related to being active. I tried many brands and found that Convatec was the best for me, but they all worked well. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I use Coloplast 2-piece but when I added the Coloplast Brava-Stips to reinforce the adapter/baseplate that really improved everything for me.

I also like adding the belt from Coloplast to give me a little extra support when the bag starts filling up.

I liked Hollister two piece best. The wafer is a lot softer/more flexible than the Coloplast wafer so I feel it is more resilient to bending/twisting/etc like you mentioned.

I use the same pouch you have, but use an eakins seal and the brava strips. This is a very secure system. I am extremely active and have never had a leak related to being active. I dont think a two peice system would be of any help to you. The two piece has some advantages but not related to leaking. The way I look at it the one piece is simple and there is one less potential leak point in a one piece. I personally didnt find the advantages of the two piece system were of much value for me, others feel differently. I change every three to four days.

Hi Matt. I used the Coloplast one piece when I first got out of hospital also. I switched to Coloplast Sensura two piece click with an Eakins cohesive and I have never had any issues. I only use 1/3 of the cohesive and its more than enough. I do a complete change once a week. I go to the gym every day, busy around the yard and camp and do a lot of traveling with no problems. I tried Convatec and Hollister but this works great for me. It may just be trial and error til you find what suits you best. My stoma is about 4 inches below my navel and just to the right so stoma location might be a factor. Good luck

Hiya Matt!

I have only had my ileo for 6 months, but I haven't had a leak and really like my setup.

I use a 2 piece, the Coloplast SenSura Click. I also use an Eakin ring with the system and feel very secure.

I sweat like crazy in the gym 5 days a week, and shower at least once a day.

The ConvaTec and Hollister brands irritated my sensitive skin, but it may be worth calling the companies for some freebies to see if they worth for you.

It's really more about your stoma location and your skin. I am very active and use Coloplast Sensura with Eakin and a Sure Seal...no issues with wear time or things popping off.

Do you use skin prep or any other lotions?

I use Hollister 2 piece and have no issues with wear time (I average 5-6 days but i shower 2x a day or so sometimes) even though I am extremely active, hiking, biking, playing tennis, working out in the gym etc.

Looks like I have some testing to do.

My stoma is located just to the right of my belly button and about two inches down.

A couple of you mentioned the Brava Strips and sure seal. Are these the additional adhesive strips that you put over the edge of the outer ring that seals to your skin? They almost create an additional layer of protection?

Yes, both Brava Strips and Sure Seals are and additional adhesive that goes on top of your wafer and extends over the edges for extra security and water proofness. They are different from each other though...I have used both and each has pros and cons.

The Sure Seals are one big, very thin piece of adhesive with a hole in the middle that allows it to go over the flange and onto they wafer. They are very flexible and water proof.

The Brava Strips are two half circle pieces that go around the edge of the wafer. They are thicker than the Sure Seal.
