Katie,
If you are on pain meds then driving may be an issue for you and possibly illegal.
I'm able to work via email, cell phone, my home office and the office at work. I was actually working while I was in hospital. "Officially" I was off of work 6-8 weeks after both my surgeries but was working part time and as necessary.
My hospital stays were longer than most because I've been dealing with high output issues which dehydrates me.
These are not "drive-through" surgeries, you need to stay in the hospital for enough time and your surgeon won't be able to predict how long that you'll need to be in the hospital until you have surgery and start healing.
Think of it this way, after surgery you'll be able to physically work full time if you want to.
My first surgery I was in for 9 days, that was for my colon removal only. 2nd surgery was the j-pouch creation and that was 24 days total(got readmitted to hospital).
