two major breaks in two nights..help

My husband has two permanent stomas . He uses the coloplast two piece. The last two nights he has had diarrhea and the bags tore loose in bed….All over everything… what a horrible mess. .I will call the ostomy nurse today, but am at a loss to know why the bag came loose. Maybe the diarrhea? Has anyone had this problem? di cry

Does your busband sleep or occasionally roll over onto his stomach? A full pouch, especially if balooned up by gas, would likely snap off in that situation. I am thankful that i have never been a stomach sleeper, though there are tech solutions out there for that too.

Since the diarrhea is more liquid than normal output, it may have gotten under the wafer and broke it down more quickly. In my experience, Coloplast does not hold up to that sort of thing very well. And like Pro said, gas ballooning up can cause problems. I don't sleep on my stomach at all, but do have a lot of gas at night. Many times just the pressure from that has pushed the wafer away from my skin, cause output to leak under the wafer. I don't know about Coloplast, but I use a Convatec bag at night that is extra big and has a much more effective filter. I love having the extra space for gas/output and a little more piece of mind.

Thank you so much. yes..I think the gas plus the liquid poop and then when he gets out of bed , he tends to rock up and down with his legs to propel himself out of bed. I think the bag exploded with the rocking and the gas…..What a mess.

   Has he ever given the Coloplast one piece a try?  I use Coloplast Sensura and never had an "accident" with it.

Call Coloplast, explain the issues and ask them to send you free samples of some of their accessories.

There are larger Filters that you can put on the bag to help relieve excess gas. The filters that they build into the bag do not work very well after the first day or two.

I'd also ask for the Brava Strips, they go over the base plate and add additional security to the setup. They really help with exploding/breaking.

If your husband recently had surgery then he might need bigger bags until his intestine(s) heals and they slow down and absorb more.

I was forced to switch to Coloplast by my insurance company from another manufacture and I hated the Coloplast products at first until I added their accessories to my set up. My favorite accessory from them is the Brava Protective Barrier Sheets, they protect the skin from the stool for laying on it and causing irritation....since I added the Barrier sheets my skin has never been better.

I called coloplast and explained the problem. you are so right. she is going to send me a sense bag..i think she said, and also a larger filter and a larger output bag for the night. and some barrier strips. I really hope it works. It is a mess.

I wore the larger bag all the time, I didn't want to be bothered with changing it at night and during the day. It's a pain to keep changing it and you have to make sure that it Clicks into place or it will fall off.

With the larger bags I didn't need the extra filters at night because there was plenty of room in the bag for gas.

No problem, those were just my experiences with Coloplast.

One last thing, if he is wearing the larger bag all the time then he might need some support when the bag fills up, you should order a Belt from your ostomy supplier for Coloplast products.

Thanks very much. We do have a belt. good idea. during the day he wears suspenders for his pants, and lets the bags just hang! Long shirt over them. ! D
