Ostomie on Remicade with breast cancer

 Hi! I have Crohn's disese.  I got  an ostomy in 2006.  I was put on Remicade in 2009.  Everything went relatively well till my recent mammogram. The biopsy showed that I have Grade 3 DCIS.  The surgeon told me that I can choose to have lumpectomy + radiation or mastectomy.  I read from somewhere that I am immune compromised till the drug is completely out of my system, which probably means I can get infection easily during and after the surgery.  I don't think either my G.I. doctor or the surgeon is familiar with my situation.  Is there anyone out there who have similar experience ?  Would greatly appreciate your input.

I am sacred and depressed.  I thought that I had tried very hard to take care of myself since I was diagnosed  with Crohn's.   I still got so sick that I had to have an ostomy.  Now this.  Life is very hard.

I do not have any answers for you, but I did want to stop by and say hi and that I'm sure someone will be by in the next day or two and have some good info or resources for you. I was bothered by something you wrote...it seemed like you almost blamed yourself for the Crohn's getting really bad. I hope you know that you could do everything possible and everything "right", and still have had the same result. It was not anything you did or didn't do. It was out of your hands. Not yours to control. Sure, you can do things that may help the situation, but getting sick was not your fault.

I know you're having a really hard time. I would encourage you to lean on your support system when you need to, whether it's family, friends, support groups, online forums like this, your faith, even a therapist if you have/want one. Be good to you.

I'm guessing you have also posted on the breast cancer forum. And (not that you want to spend all your time on the computer) the depression forum is a pretty busy place and people are very supportive.

Hope you find the answers you need, and that it will ease your mind a bit. i'll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi, so sorry about your dx.

My mom has Rheumatoid arthritis and is on Remicade for it. Several years ago she was dx'ed with breast cancer at age 77. Her doctor stopped the Remicade right away and she went in for surgery to have the tumor removed. After that she did chemo and radiation. She never had any complications or infections. She did quite well with the chemo and they got all the cancer and she's been in remission ever since. She started back up on the Remicade for her RA about 3 months (I think) after the radiation was all finished. Today, she's doing great in all departments.

Not quite your same situation but similar and I hope things will go as smoothly for you as it did for my mom. All the best to you.
