Loop output & nausea

Running out of ideas in my lil head, so thought I'd reach out.
Darn loop is a toughie. Nausea relentless, no appetite at all. Vomiting after food intake of much volume, Stoma still outputting, but too thin and too much.Imodium taken, 4 now 6 per day. Taking Zofran as needed- usually too late.
Liquid a bit leaky but think we fixed that for now with a different bag/ wafer combo.
Worried about dehydration. What am I not thinking of? What accounts for the poor appetite this time? After the first surgery she gained 10 lbs and ate everything.

The loops are tough to deal with; I lost a lot of weight while I had my loop, all food went right through me and I was constantly fighting dehydration. I maxed out all the dosages of bowel slowing agents and they really didn't help slow things down. As time went on things did get better but they were never great like the end-ileo.

It's been a little over a month so things should be improving for your daughter.

I would be concerned about the vomiting after eating, that can sometimes be a sign of a blockage. I once had a kink in my small intestine which caused me to readmitted to the hospital. My symptoms were no appetite, when I ate I vomited, my output was very thin and very noisy. The biggest issue was the pain. They inserted a stint into my stoma (I didn't feel it at all) and it cleared right up.

How long has your daughter had these symptoms?

Does your daughter's surgeon know about her symptoms?

Sounds like similar symptoms, minus the pain. We called and they think the nausea might be early dehydration. She is an easy puker, and it isn't every time. We didn't speak to surgeon himself, but his PA is pretty good. Will see how she does on a date tonight to a fancy restaurant. Oh boy... Going to pick up more Zofran.

Katmom...I don't have any answers or experience with a loop but, as a mother of 3 daughters, I just want to send you a great big tight hug.

Don't be afraid to increase the Imodium. Eight per day is the max dose and many of us used it daily for the loop (if not eight Imodium plus Lomotil). Nausea can definitely be a symptom of dehydration.

I did not "thrive" with the loop the way I did with the end ileo. I was able to manage my hydration at home, keep working, dating, even jogging a little bit, but I lost all the weight I gained with the end ileo and didn't start to gain again until a couple of months after takedown. It's a necessary evil but still far better than living in a flare.

I'd second the others when saying do what you can to rule out any type of blockage or partial obstruction.

about a week after I was discharged after my second surgery (which I had no real problems with immediately post op) I developed constant nausea and was re admitted to the hospital for another week. They could never explain what it was or what caused it but it was just constant heaving for days without even taking in any food or water. Not even zofran or any other anti nausea meds helped and finally a nurse decided to try giving me some Benadryl with an iV of zofran and suddenly it all stopped just as quickly as it had started.

As far as thickening and slowing output, the only thing that ever did the trick for me was oatmeal and a banana for breakfast and a lot of chips or pretzels throughout the day. I'd try not to drink a lot of water for the first hour or so after I ate breakfast and make sure the oatmeal was pretty thick. That would usually get me end ileo like consistency for much of the day up until around dinner time when nothing would really help at that point (potatoes, pasta, immodium - nothing)
