Hi I am new to this website. I hope some of you can help me with my questions.
I had colon cancer 7 1/2 years ago and I have had colonoscopies since. My first one was completely clean. My last 4 have all had polyps, but they were benign. My last one last month they found 3 polyps. One of them they could remove, the other two were flat polyps that were embedded in my colon. My brother died of colon cancer at age 47, and my father and grandmother have both had colon cancer. I need to have these polyps surgically removed. My doctor and surgeon are advising me to have a subtotal colectomy so I don't have to have repeated colonoscopies and my risk of colon cancer is dramatically reduced. I am told the surgery can be laporscopic and that I won't have an ostomy which I am terrified of. Has anyone else here had a subtotal colectomy for this reason? How does your elimination system work after this surgery? What about leakage, which I hear is a terrible problem? I am having surgery on Tuesday, and I am prepping for my surgery tomorrow. I am terrified to say the least. Am I doing the right thing?
