Flying with ostomy bag

I have flown many times since surgery two were international and I have only been stopped once when my bag was full and thus, visible under my shirt. Usually, I just walk through with no issues. On that occasion, the guard asked me what was under my shirt and I told her I had an ostomy. She made me touch my bag and touch some substance, and I was cleared to go. Now, I always empty before security and it's been fine!

Just like Smd729, the only time I had to even pause going through the scanner was when I didn't empty right before getting into line for TSA. And, even then, I didn't have to do anything more than a quick pat down on my back pocket (yes, that's where it showed up, LOL).

What's the blue travel card? I'm flying for the first time in March and am debating whether to declare the bag before going through or just emptying right before and try to walk on through.

It really depends on the airport you travel through. I travel a lot. The new scanners at SFO, my home airport always pick up the bag full or empty and you have to touch the bag (on the outside of clothing) they then rub a cloth like material on your hand and scan it. I have seen the images and I would be concerned if I was a TSA agent. It takes less then a minute but is a hassle because your stuff is sitting on the line, helps if your traveling with a companion. I haven’t messed with any cards. They are still going to check you if they want too, all it does is keep you from saying the word ostomy, not an issue for me.

I am now Pre-TSA so it is no longer much of even a minor issue. The Pre TSA designation is great (dont think it is good for international flights), it is like the old days, nothing comes off you empty your pockets, walk through old type scanner and you’re done. Your carry on can have a comptuter and the 3 oz. bottles left inside and gets scaned like all carry-ons. The old type scanners do not pick up my bag and it is with them that the empty bag might be useful.

Sometimes I have gone straight through and sometimes I have been stopped...usually with a full body scanners. The last time I was stopped, they told me they needed to see the top of the ostomy and I could go into a private room if I wanted. That one kind of frustrated me because I was running a little behind for the flight. So I just pulled up my shirt a little, pull down the very top of my pants a little, and she nodded and I was on my way. That's only happened one time and they did offer a private screening, but I did not have time.The majority of the time I go right through without anybody saying a word. And two times I have had my hands swiped for the drug/explosives. Definitely don't let it keep you from getting out and about! Have fun on your trip!
