I have a small stump. My rectum and colon were removed five years ago. In the months following my operation, I had bleeding and some pressure. I developed a hematoma and my surgeon was able to take care of it during an office visit
Hurt like the dickens...no anesthesia. I was placed on a two week regimen of antibiotics and at my next visit it was all cleared up. Everything was fine until last summer when I started feeling pressure inside the anus. My original surgeon retired in 2013. I am seeing another surgeon here in south Jersey. He did biopsies in November...no cancer, no dysplasia, but the UC is back inside the anus. Since November, I have had issues off and on...some mucus...a bit of bleeding (but I think I also have hemmies and I carry my 22 lb grandson around, which I shouldn't). I am scheduled for more biopsies July 24th, but the past three weeks or so, I feel great...no pressure or discomfort at all...so, talking to the surgeon next week and maybe I can postpone those biopsies.
My original surgeon never mentioned a word to me about
having annual biopsies, etc.. When I asked why he left the anus he told me, in his opinion, there are more complications when the anus is removed. My rectum was badly diseased with UC...he did remove the entire rectum and colon. I went to him because he was head of colorectal surgery at Penn in Philadelphia...trained at the Cleveland Clinic. I still think the world of the guy...created the most fantastic stoma ever! Never a problem with it.
