My surgeon FINALLY called me yesterday afternoon. He had done extensive biopsies on the 17th of Sept. No dysplasia, no cancer. I asked him what he thought about my taking a short course of prednisone to get the UC under control in the anus, since the rectal meds did nothing. He is totally against prednisone as I have osteoporosis and the prednisone gave me diabetes and extremely high BP when I was on it before. I asked once again about removal of the anus and he said it would be too much of an operation for me. I am 69, otherwise in pretty good health. I have an appointment with him on Tuesday and we will discuss things further. He removed that skin tag and it sounds like it was a lot more involved than he thought...something about a granuloma? I don't know...all I know is...yipppeeeee...no dysplasia or cancer. I am still going to Dr. McClane at Cooper Health Systems on the 27th for another opinion. Other than the soreness from that skin tag removal, I feel pretty good!!!

Yay I'm so happy for you. I was hoping it would come back good. After such a long time it's always a concern. So... I met with my surgeon and he wants to have a colorectal surgeon take the remaining anus/rectum out at the same time he repairs the hernia. He said even tho there is no cancer or dysplasia, because I have moderately severe UC there is still severe inflammation. His reasoning is it has a high risk of cancer down the road and once he puts the mesh in it would be extremely difficult if not impossible to take it out later. I thought they went in from the back to do that surgery but I guess not. If anyone knows more about this procedure any input would be appreciated! So I requested Dr Fichera and they are scheduling an appt with him. Thank you so much for giving me his name. He had two different surgeons in mind and I picked Fichera.

Well, I'm glad you have no signs of cancer, but I don't see why at 69 and in good health you are too old to have the anus surgically removed. Hopefully the second opinion doc will agree to it, if that's what you want.

I agree. As long as you're in good health I don't understand that. I know a woman at 70 yrs old who had the whole j pouch procedure done. Happy to hear no sign of cancer! Good luck with your second opinion....get a third if need be.

I agree too, my GI had a patient well into her 70's who got a jpouch. I think you'll be surprised with the 2nd opinion- get that stupid thing out already!

These are my thoughts....the surgeon I am seeing now is 62 yrs old. He probably is looking at retirement in the near future and doesn't want to take on a difficult task. To be honest, I don't think he did so hot of a job even removing that skin tag because it is still oozing blood and hurts like the dickens. The surgeon from whom I am seeking my second opinion is only in his mid 40's.

That's wonderful Christine! I do hope the 2nd opinion is more willing to do surgery... this is something you don't want to worry about forever. I think 69 and healthy sounds like a pretty good candidate but I don't know much about it... I am just happy you got good news from the biopsies :)

I sure hope this second surgeon is more on board with removing the rest of it. Then you would be done and wouldn't have that to worry about. How is your skin tag spot doing? Any better? Hope that starts healing up too.

I also hope the 2nd opinion will agree that it needs to go. And, if it were me, I would get a third if I didn't feel right about it. Bleeding from your vagina due to UC, is not normal. I am no expert, but from everything I have read, unless it is Crohn's, surgery to remove everything cures UC.

As long as there is inflammation, you will have issues with symptoms, ongoing testing, worry, etc. If you are in good health now, I don't understand why it could not be done while you are healthy rather than wait until you are even older and maybe less healthy due to the inflammation or just general declining health due to age.

Very glad than your results came back good! I too hope that the second or third opinion is more promising. Isn't 70 the new 50 or something like that? Baby boomers changing things and all?
