Hi have spoken to the consultant and have finely made the decision to go with a stoma, however just wondering how you made the choice of bags and how do you cope at night? Also what about
the low residue diet?

Hi Telha!
With regard to choice of bags, I'm still using the brand that was given to me when I was in hospital - think I was luckily that they suited me so well from the outset! I did try a couple of others makes, but didn't like them as much so always went back to my original ones. You can get companies to send you out some samples of their bags to try out what's best for you. Your stoma nurse would be able to advise you also I'm sure.
At night, I get up once a night to empty. I don't know what wakes me to be honest, maybe the weight of the bag or turning over I feel it, I'm not sure. But it's never more than once. For the first while it was difficult because I would properly wake up in the process and couldn't get back to sleep for ages, but now I'm half asleep still while doing it, it doesn't really disrupt me most of the time. I can sleep any way in bed also, even on my tummy! I move an awful lot in bed too, and don't wear anything to hold my bag in place, but it's always fine. I do usually wake up on my back though, so I must roll over at some stage when it fills up.
Diet is something that you should take slowly. Low residue for the first while. I was probably low residue for 2 months, and it took even longer to be able to handle large quantities of food. But I got there, and now I can literally eat anything with no problems - even foods that I was recommended not to have! When you're trying a new food, just have a small amount and see how your stoma acts with it, then you can always have more next time if everything goes ok. And even if you have some problems, try again in a few months. I couldn't eat apples until a few months ago, over a year after my surgery - they caused me a lot of pain when I tried. Now I eat an apple every day, skin and all, with no problems. Everyone is different though, the key is just to take it slow & be patient with yourself! :)
