Pickles and tomatoes

I am new with my ileostomy and so far not a fan. I eat and my intestines complain. I'm still learning what and how to eat. I could really do without the 3 am bag emptying. Does that happen to everyone? I haven't gotten a good nights sleep since I got it.

Oh boy I feel like I have hit the lottery. I empty at 10 pm and don't have to empty again until 4 - 6 am. At least it isn't disturbing my sleep....lol.

I am almost 3 months out from surgery. I have a colostomy so I am sure that it is alittle different.

I also drink most of my liquids before 8 pm...and I have a "set" amount I have to drink by certain times. Sounds crazy but its made my intestines/colon much happier and easier to live with once I started it. Freddie doesn't misbehave as much.

My doctor said people will have change/adjustment periods for the first 6 -12 month with all stomas.

Cupcakespinkgal, you and NCOT saved my sanity while going thru my surgery.. Because of your posts I was ready to accept the surgery and see the positives in this journey. Thank you.....

Babynurz, are you keeping a food journal? Following the guidlines for what to eat? Does it happen with everything you eat? Are you drinking enough water? For me, and I know a colostomy is alittle different, I had to eat carefully (still do), use a food diary, and keep track of my fluids. I discovered that anything with hot seasoning (even just a pinch that you can't taste) sends my intestines and colon into spasms. Same thing with some herbs that prior to surgery were tolerated.

Its definitely a learning curve.

6 weeks is still really early. I think you will be surprised how much changes by 3 months and again by 6 months. I empty about half as much now at 9 months than I did at 3 mos.

I use a bag with a filter but don't think the filters work very well. I found depending on what I eat the gas at night is better or worse. A lot of it has to do with the body naturally makes gas when the guts are empty. Some people say eating a small snack of protein like a cheese stick before bed helps.

I've heard some of the filtered bags that work best are made by
B Braun. I've not tied them yet but got some samples. Not all suppliers carry them yet though.

Do you wear a one piece and the whole thing flew off or a click 2 piece and just the bag?

I was never comfortable with the 2 pieces with the Tupperware ring attachment for that reason. I have a 2 piece but with adhesive coupling.
