Hi.
Sounds as If your colon's already affected by changes. Your diet, and medication regime is not really working for you. Few things, to consider in your decision. 1st, your age and any other health problems. This could affect how you heal. Next, family. I hope that you have children already. I just recently found out last month that when getting the the Ileoanal Reanastomosis or "take down" where a J-pouch is created, can lead to fertility issues. How you may ask?, It's due to the healing process where pelvic adhesions and scarring will then take over.
It was 17 years old when I opted to have a subtotal colectomy and j-pouch creation in 1994. My UC was severe and all medication failed for controlling that condition. That was 23 years ago and that cured my UC. Do I regret my decision of doing it? No way!!!!! However, I'm 40 y/o and I have no children due to severe pelvic adhesions. It was told to my grandmother who asked the physicians about having children, that it would not effect my doing so, but it did. That was in 1994.
All in all, having this surgery was the best decision. Now, you will absolutely know when it's time to use the restroom because, you will know. You can have 10 or more stools a day, but way less than 40!
Best of luck to you!
