I just had my colostomy on 11/23/2005. I have had Chron's for 12 years (not severe) but developed a perforated bowel during pregnancy. Last night I started having bad stomach cramps and then started throwing up. When the throwing up stopped, I started to get really bad diarreha. It was leaking everywhere and I couldn't control it. Finally the nurse came in and we seem to have a good seal on the flange. She thought it may be a blockage working its way through. It seems to have settled down slightly but still a lot of gas and loose stool. How do you deal with diarreha with an ostomy?? I am so afraid to move or do anything in case it leaks. Feels like such a setback in my recovery. Is this normal and do others experience this?? How can I stop it?

I had D the other day and it went away after 24 hours. My ET nurse siad it was something I ate and it happens. West

it sounds to me like you had a bit of a blockage going on there that finaly worked its way through. Or maybe it was somthing that you ate that didnt agree with you. You must make sure that you are getting enough to drink so that you don't become dehydrated.

I hope by now that things have settled down for you. It isn't normal to have diarrea like that. Something must have caused it. If you start to get the symptoms often then I would say that you need to see the Doctor to find out what is going on. Hopefully it was just a one off though.

it certainly does sound like a mini blockage. At least it passed pretty quickly for you.

One of the issues contributing to the leakage because of the diarrhoea may be because in hospital you are spending most of your time lieing down and not upright. When you're upright most of the day, the stool, hopefully, will slip down into the bag and not have to find its way out via the wafer like it does when you're lieing down.

This isn't to say you won't experience leaks once you're up and around. You most probably will, especially at first - most new ostomates do, but once you find the right appliance type for you (you DON'T have to stay with what they give you in hospital - ring around the different manufacturers and ask for free samples to try out), leaks should be few and far between.

NOTE: your stool after an ileostomy will never be more than 'toothpaste' like consistency. At first it will be more watery than normal anyway until your bowel settles down. After a while, your small bowel will realise it has to do the job of the large bowel and absorb a little more water, although it will never be as effective as the large bowel was. Give it time and it will thicken up a little.
