Back in the Hospital

Last night I woke with horrible abdominal pain and nausea. It felt like someone was standing on my stomach. I thought it might of been a blockage so I tried all the tricks but nothing helped. I decided to take myself to the ER this morning as it's a pain I've not felt before and I've learned to listen to my body. Long story short after they did a CT scan, they said they found fluid accumulating around my J Pouch. They don't know the cause yet but they started me on antibiotics. My white blood count is a little high at 13.5. Now it's wait and see and hoping I don't need any surgery of any king

That really stinks, I'm so sorry. Glad you're u listened to your body and sought medical attention. What's the plan on figuring out why this is happening? Are they doing any tests or going to wait and see how you respond to the antibiotics? Are they giving you pain medicine? Is it helping at all?

right now it's wait and see, hopefully they don't need to go in and do anything. I've got oral and IV pain meds but right now the oral meds are about to make me puke. I need to stick to the IV. They aren't feeding me in case there is any surgery needed

Can they give you zofran or something else for nausea? They have a few diff type of anti-nausea out there. Hang in there!

They were giving me zofran and I still ended up puking from the nausea, I've now been switched to an IV bag medication for the nausea which is working far better

Were you feeling sick/bad for the past week or two?

Were you able to empty your j-pouch? Any symptoms prior to the pain?

I felt completely normal and the pouch was acting as normal, I had no indication of anything. I just woke with that odd pain. Apparently I have three pockets and as of not it seems only one is able to be drained. they don't know the cause yet, the surgeon needs to consult with radiology. I'm getting Zyson for antibiotics

Didn't you have an abscess or leak after your takedown?

I had one after my Step 1 surgery where they had to go back in and repair what was leaking, that was in my lower right abdomen

I honestly started to feel better before the antibiotics were given to me in the ER. I still had the nausea but the pain was virtually gone. I did throw up on Saturday night once but that could of been due to the oral percocet and maybe the contrast dye for the CT scan. I felt fine yesterday and still do today except for a headache due to no food since Friday. My surgeon saw the orders for draining the fluid and apparently got pretty mad. He came to check on me and said he will go review the scans with radiology. As of now he doesn't want to do anything and bumped me up to a liquid diet.

Glad you are no longer in pain. I hope you get to eat soon so that you can get some nourishment. Why was the doctor mad?

I'm still waiting to see my surgeon, I know he did review the scans. From what I heard from the nurse he doesn't want to do anything at this time, I'll know more when he comes back to speak to me. He bumped me up to a full diet and if I tolerate the dinner here tonight they will let me go home probably with some followup appointments.

I do still have my insurance policy which will pay me $1,200 if I'm discharged tonight. Guess that's a little bonus for being stuck in the hospital lol

I got home last night, I tolerated the dinner just fine. My surgeons residents came by to answer my questions as mine was in surgery. From what he saw in the scans and talking with the radiologist, what was thought to be fluid is more than likely loops of bowel. They have no answers as to what hit me. My white count went way back down. It was 13.5 when I checked in and it was around 5 when I left. I'm going to guess it was some sort of obstruction based on my symptoms. I'll see him in a week or two and have more one on one time with him. I feel completely fine

It’s understandable why your surgeon was so upset that they wanted to do surgery on you to drain the fluid. Imagine if they inserted a needle and it was your intestine, not fluid around your jpouch?

Oh geez, a radiologist has never seen a jpouch.

I remember my ostomy nurse giving me a list/instructions of things not to let ER staff or doctors do if I end up in an ER that isn't used to ileostomies. Shocking to me that people still treat jpouch and ileos as uncommon things.

Those obstructions are painful... Sometimes I wonder which is worse....dealing with medical professionals that are ignorant of IBD surgeries that impact what they "think" they are seeing or worrying if your GI, CRS, or internalist is going to ensure that everything goes as planned. (Sorry I am a control nut)

Did they figure out what raised your WBC? And were you feverish?

Cupcake....there's a list? I haven't even thought of what an unknown might try to do...... Can you remember or share? (Should I have started a new thread?)

no idea as to why my white count went up but I never ran a fever as far as I know, my temp was always normal during my hospital stay. I also thought maybe it could of been some sort of stomach bug? I only threw up once and could barely go to the bathroom though so I thought that wouldn't be the case of a bug
