Heat Rash On Ostomy

Hi,even though I have had my urostomy/ileostomy virtually all my life( since two weeks after I was born in 1969),I've never posted on an ostomy website.My question is: Is mouthwash safe to use on ostomies to help combat heat rashes ? I use it to treat rashes under my breast and it works within a day or two. I'm thinking of trying it as nothing else seems to be working.Please share your opinion.Thanks!!☺️

Hi Judy, and welcome!

I have limited experience,having had an ostomy for only7 months. But we have sure had some hot weather!

I have used nystatin powder (which is what I ue under my breast) and calamine lotion (letting it dry before sticking anything to it, of course.)

What else have you tried?

Convatec powder( The exact name eludes me), it didn't help much. I'm willing to try the mouthwash this evening when I change the wafer.It will sting like heck,I'm sure; but the heat rash prevents the wafer from sticking properly.I will post in a few days with the results! Wish me success!!🤗

Hi. Judy, and welcome! Have you ever used a skin prep? I use Smith Nephew Skin-Prep because I’m allergic to adhesives and it works beautifully. I’ve have had my ostomy for nearly 29 years and haven’t had a problem. I live in humid Florida, too! Plus, I have a pool and sit IN the pool for several hours a day reading and my wafer stays secure.

When I change my appliance, I wash the area thoroughly with soap and water and rinse well. I then use my hairdryer on the lowest heat and dry the skin well. Then I put on the skin prep and dry that too. I’m ready to apply the wafer and I press on the part closest to the stoma to make sure it’s stuck well and finish by removing the paper protecting the rest of the adhesive and press that down. I don’t get leaking under the wafer and the skin prep protects the skin. I make sure I don’t try to get more days out of my appliance than I should. That’s a sure fire way to get leaking under the wafer. For years I changed the appliance every four days.

The box says it helps tape, film, and appliance adhesion, reduces friction, reduces risk of tape stripping, and it’s an effective protection between tape and skin. It’s even pediatric tested. The main ingredient is isopropyl alcohol (which might also help clear up that rash!). Once the rash is cleared up, this should protect your skin. The box contains packets...like alcohol wipes are packaged.

Maybe you have an allergy to adhesives also. I break out in blisters but this skin prep prevents that because it’s a thin barrier protecting my skin from the adhesives. I hope this helps you.

Thanks,Sherrine for your tips. I find it a comfort to see so many people here in this forum and in the other forums here from people who have health issues similar to mine... Namely chronic pain.Sherrine, Do you ever worry that being in a pool for an extended length of time might prevent your ostomy from sticking in the future? I think...no,I KNOW that I am overly cautious in trying to avoid submerging my ostomy area in water. I use a shower seat because of my balance issues and I do what I can to keep from getting my ostomy wet for fear of it not sticking. I used to use the re-useable rubber bags with the cement glue up until about my 30th birthday-Lord, I hated those things!!!!skull
That was the very first time (2000 circa) I experienced a rash on my ostomy that prevented it from sticking. I have found much better success with the Disposable wafers of Convatec.😀

A bit about me: I am 48 from Florida, I was born with spina bifida, I have osteoarthritis and both my hands my hips,my knees, and my back. I am a Christian who loves the Lord more than anything. I am a huge animal lover especially cats and rabbits. I love weather watching too.. living in Florida there's plenty of weather watching to be had!!😁

I have worn the Convatec wafers and pouches since my ostomy. They were given to me at the Cleveland Clinic where I had my surgery in 1989. My pouch is separate and has like a Tupperware seal that I press on the wafer once I have the wafer set. Convatec is a great product in my estimation.

I moved to Florida nearly 21 years and have been in the pool for long periods of time since I have lived here. I also have been in the Gulf of Mexico, snorkeling in the Caribbean, swimming in cruise line pools, etc. This has never loosened my appliance. But I use the skin prep which I believe helps with adhesion. I also use Stomahesive paste around the opening of the wafer before putting the wafer on. I actually do that before I start changing the appliance. This allows the paste to set up a little.

The ostomy should free you up! I can’t speak for a urostomy. But my output is very liquify so it’s kind of like what a urostomy would be like and I don’t have leakage problems. I have a well-built stoma.

My list of health issues can be found in my signature at the bottom of this post. I am also a Christian who loves the Lord and I have a very positive attitude. This has helped me a lot. I also love the scripture I put in my signature. It keeps me on an even keel.

I too am an animal lover. I even rescue lizards from my cat. 😁. I have had a wonderful and enjoyable life in spite of my illnesses. I’m truly blessed.

I was wondering how you were able to list your health issues!! I could not figure it out when I was typing out my profile.Thanks! I know the feeling I can't stand when a lizard gets trapped in my house. They are nearly impossible to catch and I know what will happen slowly and painfully. 😔

Above, on a blue bar, toy will see My Profile. Click on that and it takes you into your profile. The. There is a blue bar with choices. I think it says My Profile and the next says Change Password, and the third one...at least when I just checked...says Missing Key Value. It shouldn’t say that but we are in the process of updating the HealingWell site so this is a glitch. Anyway, click on Missing Key Value and then you can see where you can fill in information about yourself. There is a section at the very bottom called Signature and this is where you can type your illnesses. And, when you are done, click on Submit and you should now have a signature with your illnesses listed.

No, AS is a disease of the spine...kind of like rheumatoid arthritis of the spine. It’s an inflammatory illness. The vertebrae can fuse and I wouldn’t be able to bend or twist my spine. So I use ibuprofen and a muscle relaxer and keep moving!

I see.I heard of it; but was not sure what exactly it is.I know God is in control; but I worry about getting older and less able to take care of myself.I do OK now.I use a cane to get around.I am unable to drive, so I must rely on others to get me to and from where I need to be.I know worrying accomplishes nothing.
