On January 23 I had ileostomy surgery. I'm glad I did it. Even though the recovery is slow (wow, am I sore).  I did develop an ileus the night I came home and had to go back in for 2 more nights. 8 nights total in the hospital.  I had colon cancer 9 years ago.  My pathology report did show abnormal cells heading towards dysplasia.  So I am very grateful and at peace that this gross, inflamed, crohn's infested colon is out of my body. I can't wait to be out and about.  I don't have to worry about pooping my pants anymore.  It seems like forever since I have taken the subway into the city to go exploring or go on vacation without the worry and panic regarding the incontinence I was frequently experiencing.  For me this surgery was the absolute right thing to do.

Hello artist.

I am so glad that everything went well for you and that you are sounding so posative. It is a great feeling isnt it,to not have the worry of that sudden urge to go to the bathroom that you just can not control. I remember the first couple of days after my Ileostomy was so weird. As well as having a cathater,the nurse was taking care of the bag emptying etc. So I had 2 whole days of not going any where near a toilet. That seemed realy alian to me lol.

Just one word of warning. Don't push yourself to quickly into doing all the adventerous things that you want to do. You will be able to do it "all" very soon,but please make sure that you are fully recovered from the surgery first. It's well worth waiting that little bit of extra time in the long run.

I have just realised that we share the same surgery date January 23rd, Mine was 2003 though.

     My ileostomy is the best thing I did for myself.  I was chained to the toilet for 11 years before I did something about it.  You now have freedom.  Just think, you don't even have to worry if you get Montezuma'a revenge!  tongue
