It looks like you are new to the forum. Welcome. There are many people that read the forums and hopefully others will come along with additional ideas. Regardless I will check back and answer any questions you have.
I am sorry you are having these issues.
Unsure if you have a colostomy or an ileostomy. I have had 3 different surgeries for stomas in the last 5 years. Each one has been a colostomy but they have all behaved differently... The first had a schedule from the beginning, one of them was going all the time, and one was just erratic.
Just a few thoughts....
1.) I used to try to change my appliance in the morning....I sounded just like you... Finally out of desperation I had to chart when I went for a week or two and then moved my changing time accordingly. (10 to 11 pm or when I get up at 3 am to go pee.)
2.) I have to eat at least 8 marshmallows and allow at least 30 minutes before they start working. The 24 hours before a change I eat mostly protein or foods that it takes my body awhile to process. (Roast beef, shrimp, or peanut butter on crackers with a slice of banana)
3.) Before I remove my appliance I have everything
opened and waiting in 1pile for usage. Place them in order of what you will use first....
opened adhesive removal pads, skin protectant pads, ring, precut wafer and bag (unless it is a 1 piece)
4.) I work very quickly. I have a small little plastic container that I used to sort of "hunker" over so the discharge would fall down into that instead of sliding down my abdomen. The longer I have had a stoma the less I have to use it. I gave up on "warming" the appliances under my legs.
I take it off and clean and check the skin at the same time, put the skin protectant on, use the ring, push the 1 piece on, or the base...and then the bag. (The 1 piece seems to be easier and faster) Next I blow dry the wafer to my skin for about
5 minutes. When I have to use the powder I usually have to use my plastic "hunker bowl" so I don't contaminate the area.
It cuts down on time if you have everything
open and ready--not just within reach where you have to
open.
I don't know how long you have had a stoma, but it took me about
6 months.
Good luck!
Clo
