Is there a cure for Chrones?

Hi everyone, if chrones is restricted to the large intest. and you have your large intest. removed, are you cured?

Hi Janet, I have a 17 year old son who has crohns. I have been told by his doctors that crohns is a cronic disease, it cant be cured.  It can go into remission.  My son is planned to have a resection of his intestine, which will remove ALL of his intestine that is diseased by crohns, which is about 12 inches. I have been told that this is NOT a cure.  That he may stay in remission for 6 months maybe a year maybe longer. I have been told by some people in the crohns community that they have been in remission up to 10 years when they had the same surgery as Tyler has planned.  So I am hopefull. Hope this has helped.

Hi Tylers mum,

Thankyou for confirming my beliefs for the past 16 years.  I have had the crohns since I was 19 (now nearly 38) and I have had an illiostomy for the 16 years ( I was told I had OC till the op) but the other day I was told by a lady that she no longer had crohns since her bowel resection as all her Large Int. was removed and there is no sign of it now.  My surgeon is the best and I believe him but I don't see him very often (once a year as I still have 10 inch from my bottom) and I have been in remission now since my op (16y).  Prior to it I suffered from all side effects you can and now I only get the odd side effect to remind me that I have crohns.  I hope Tyler has I remission like mine - a very, very long one.

Hi Janet- I have Crohn's-colitis, which is Crohn's of the large bowel. Unfortunately, it's not curable and does tend to reoccur in the small bowel after a colectomy. The average length of time for remission after a colectomy is 5 years.


18 months ago I had 2/3 of my large bowel and a foot of small bowel removed that had backwash ulceration from the colon. The small bowel is currently healthy, but the remaining piece of sigmoid colon and rectum have since flared up so I can't have reconnective surgery.


In terms of 'luckiness' in the Crohn's stakes, us with Crohn's-colitis are probably the better off compared to those with Crohn's in the small bowel. The large bowel isn't neccessary for digestion (unlike the small bowel) so we're lucky that we were affected in expendable bowel first.

Thanks Kez, and congrats on the Rugby World Cup. Since I was first diagnosed at 19, things have changed, treatment, ideas, everything. I travelled to the UK and live for 18 months 10 years ago and found it interesting that I got all supplies from a chemist, are things the same now or have they changed, interested because I will be, in the future returning for a another trip.
How is your health now? Hope you are on top of things at the moment.

I'm in remission in the bowel that I use, the 1/3 of the large bowel that was left in has flared.

With regards to medicines- you get then prescribed by the doctor, take the prescription form to the chemists, they dispense it for you then and there and voila! Medicines to go!

Hey KezP, I too have crohns colitis, However when I first became sick 13 yrs. ago, I was diagnosed with crohns, it was only 6 yrs. ago that it was "upgraded to crohns colitis. It affects part or all of the colon. This form comprises about 20% of all cases of crohns disease. Variouse patterns are seen. In about 1/2 of these cases CD lesions may be seen throughout one continuous subsegment of the colon. In another 1/4, skip areas are seen between multiple diseased area. In the remaining 1/4 the entire colon is involved with no skip area. Unlike UC in which inflammation is usually confined to the inner mucosal surface, CD typically involves all layers of the affected tissue. Crohns can affect anywhere from the mouth to the anus. I also have severe perianal crohns skin tags that were mistaken for hemerroides JUST before I was diagnosed, they didi a hemerroidecotmy on me and now i cannot and have not been in remission for 13 yrs, since being diagnosed.

Hi Pb4-thanks for the information.

I had deep patchy lesions throughout my colon (no rectal involvement through) and backwash ileitis. The lesions I did have had gone through the entire tissue of the bowel so that's why a lot had to come out.

I consider myself pretty lucky though- it will be two years since the op in April and thus far I have no symptoms of Crohn's returning in the small bowel. My leftovers are doing well too, and all blood tests are at normal levels.
