Question for the girls

I can't answer any of your questions since I don't have any kids (only furbabies) and I had my surgery as a kid before I got my period (actually it was one of the reasons I had surgery - the meds I was on, esp pred was delaying puberty for me).

I will tell you that my periods have been fine though. Immediately after surgery, they might remain a little messed up until your body recovers properly but after that they should be fine. However, I'm sure someone here will be able to help you out.

DEAR CAT. THEY REMOVED MY RECTUM when I had the surgery. yes it did hurt but i knew it would get better. I've had two children since then and had an episotomy with both. The first one was horrible. The second one was not bad all. I had the same doctor for both. go figure. I was in much better shape with my second child. ( I walked everwhere) this might have made a difference? As for the periods. Right after I had my surgery I had a white discharge. this lasted about a week. Then about three months before I had a regular periods. I did have some spotting. I kept a panty shield on for quite awhile. I was also told ( back then) no tampons for at lest three months. the pill also helped make me more regular. I did not want to get pregnant after having this kind of surgery. Both my children were delivered naturally.

I think it is weird that they sew your bottom up too. When I first decided to do this, someone said, you know you have to lose your butthole right? ANd I couldnot for the life of me figure out how you could have your butthole taken out, then I realized it wasn't really taken out, just sewn shut. Boy was I dumb, lol. Thanks Mrz.B for the info.

This is something that I'm confused about and my boyfriend is very confused about. So they sew up your butt..on the inside or outside? I'm not having my rectum removed so do they just leave everything the way it is?
One doctor says I have UC my new doctor says I have crohns..the reason for my ileostomy is because I have a rectal vaginal fistula...I got it from being cut during child birth. The doctor did a horrible job but of course he's not going to admit to it. It really sucks because I've had 3 surgeries to try to heal the fistula, but with UC its almost impossible to heal..and they say the rectal vaginal fistulas are the hardest to heal. So it just angers me that my UC or crohns is really doing well but because of something that could have been avoided, I am now getting stuck with a bag. If I knew then what I know now, I would have demanded a C section. Its just scary what can happen if doctors are careless.

To be honest I am not too sure but i think that I was sewn up from inside.Strange realy because I usualy ask lots of questions of Doctors but it didnt cross my mind to ask at the time.

If you are not having your rectum removed then I dont think that they would sew you up,it will probably be left just the way it is. Ask your Surgeon before you go for the surgery,exactly what he will be doing.

 Is your ileostomy being done so that the Fistula has a chance to heal?

 

Okay I'm really confused now. I'm having step 1 of a possible 2 or 3-step surgery done May 10th and my surgeon said that he's going to remove my large intestine and rectum, but from reading these posts from everyone, it sounds like you only get your rectum removed if you have a permanent bag. Am I reading this the wrong way? Please inform me!

For those having surgery and receiving a permanent ileostomy the anal area is sewn shut.  For those having j-pouch surgery, the rectum is removed but the anal muscles are left intact.  A temporary ileostomy is given (if have a 2 or 3 step).  If you are having j-pouch surgery your butt will not be sewn shut.
