Showering with a Stoma

I have just been reading on another site about showering. I have been removing the bag and showering without any problem. I leave the barrier on. Is there some reservation about getting the stoma wet? My wife seems to think that there is, but I like the clean feeling I get.

Hello Arundinaria.

I generaly prefer to leave my bag on in the shower and change afterwards. Sometimes I shower without it and getting it wet isnt a problem at all. If the stoma doesnt get wet how would you keep it clean? it might not be a good idea to aim a powerful shower right at the stoma though so as not to damage it.

Your stoma is used to having poop on it and in it all the time, water is not going to hurt it in the slightest :) It can, however, erode the wafer away a bit but if you're still getting good weartime the way you're doing it, then go for it :) Remember, with ostomy care, whatever works for you is the right way :)

On change days, I completely remove my bag (I wear a one piece) and let the water run over my stoma to get it really clean. Harriet (my stoma) loves it :). At all other times I wear my bag in the shower without a problem.
