Any Kock ileostomies out there?

Hi everyone! I have been on the ulcerative colitis forum for quite some time now- my disease has progressed to the point where surgery is fast becoming a reality. I just spoke with my GI this AM regarding the different types of surgeries- I have been leery of a j pouch for various reasons, I don't like the idea of wearing a bag forever, but the Kock ileostomy sounds ok. However, I don't know if this type of ileostomy is performed frequently, or if there are problems people experience, etc. If anyone on here has one, could you please share your experience with me? Any info would be helpful- I can only check the boards from the library or work, so I won't be on again 'til probably this Saturday. Thanks a bunch! Hope everyone is doing well!

You don't have to have the bag forever with a J-Pouch surgery. It's just temporary. There's a 1,2, or 3-step surgery that can be performed resulting with no bag in the end. With a 1-step surgery, you don't have to have a bag at all...they take out your colon and connect your small intestine all in one step and that's it! With the 2-step you'll have the bag for 2-3 months then get reconnected, and with the 3-step you'll have the bag for about 5-6 months then get reconnected.

I looked into that Kock pouch too, but when I found out only about 500 had been done so far, I thought no thank you, lol. They are also only done in a few parts of the country, Mainly in MIssissippi and Lousiania. I asked my surgeon about it before I decided and he said that that particluar surgery still had alot of problems to be worked out. He said he didn't recommend it but that he would glad send me to someone if I wanted to go. The bag really isn't that bad.
