Hello all,
I have had my ileostomy now since february 19th. My wound got infected so I got a wound vac then I went back in the hospital a couple of times aftermy initial stay. I also have a drain in an abdominal abscess. My meds in the morning make me sick to my stomach so I tried it with food as well as without and had the same result. Made my way to the toilet since my salivary glands were overproducing saliva as if I was going to vomit. After spitting in the toilet a few times the feeling would pass. I found if I went back to sleep after taking my meds I would not have this issue at all. Last night for the first time did my meds effect me in making me feel like I was going to vomit.
This morning I didnt have time to take my meds and go back to bed since I had errands to run and plans with my folks since they got back from a vacation after 10 days. After taking my meds I was ok for a bit then I ate a banana about 45 minutes later. Not even 5 minutes and I was in the bathroom but this time I did vomit. I have been having lots of output in my pouch and I am eating soft foods as to not obstruct my intestines. I took my temp after vomiting and it was normal, actually slightly below normal.
I have visiting nurses come mondays, wednesdays, and fridays everyweek. They come since my wound vac has to be changed 3 times a week. This is when my ostomy gets changed since my wound is about 1 inch from my stoma. My wound vac goes on then the flange and bag then they turn the wound vac on so that the tape edges on the flange get in every nook and cranny so it wont leak. I have had some issues where it did leak majority of the time was due to the vac being turned on prior to the flange application. I have had 1 other time it leaked and that was due to what I think was the stoma was slipping under the flange and the paste went well I'm not sure since I use the paste every time a flange goes on. Somehow it all broke through though and feces was running down my leg at 2am
Last night I took the bag off since I clean the stoma itself 1 or 2 times a day same with the total cleaning of the ostomy bag. The stoma looked like it may slip under the flange so I was able to trim a small amount of the flange off to stop the possibility of it slipping under and causing issues like before. I even broke down and wore my ostomy belt today fearing that without it the stoma would slip under, I have not been wearing it since it has to go right over my drain and the drain dressing which hurts like crazy. I got home today after eating out with my folks and I took off my bag to clean it and change to my other bag I keep handy while the other dries. The stoma was in fact slipping under the flange and starting to lose color it was a very pale pink. As soon as I put pressure on the flange shifting it so that it wasn't under the flange the color returned. I would like to know why I have issues with the stoma going under the flange. The nurse is putting it on me so it isnt like me not looking in a mirrir while placing it you would think that they would be able to center it a heck of a lot better than they are.
