Pregnancy after Colectomy

anyone still have their rectal stump with mucous fistula and have a c-section? This may be the situation i'll be in

Hi.

I had a total colectomy 4 years ago which has since been changed to an internal pouch.  Me and my hubby have been trying for the last 6 months to get pregnant with no luck so far.  Does anyone know of risk to fertility after this surgery?  I wasn't given much info from the surgeon at the time as it wasn't an issue for me then.  I'm 30 years old.  Any help would be great

I totally inderstand all your concerns.  i was pretty unwell before i had my colectomy due to ulcerative colitis and to be honest the surgery was a total relief.  I'll not lie, it was painful but the docs completely sorted out my pain relief before I got discharged so it was well controlled.  I was quite scared of having sex after the surgery so waited for 3 months.  It didn't hurt but I was just very apprehensive.  As far as getting pregnant goes, I can't comment as I'm currently trying to get pregnant myself.  Good luck with the surgery

This is my first post on the web, Iv been looking for a site that relates to me rightnow.

Ill give you abit of history Im 35, total colectomy 1993(pls dont watch my spelling is terrible), i had a j pouch for about 3years then it failed, had a hip absess emergency ileastomy 2005, iv suffered with scatica for years since in my bum area.

Anyway with all that i now want to be a mum, so aftr a year my husband 48 who already as kids, and i seeked help from fertility clinic as id been trying for over a year. i must stress i do have other health issues.

i just wanted to share with you i have many fears of trying to get pregnant, being pregnant and afterwards. my doc, gp, fertility clinic staff are all positive and happy to help me. i feel as long as you take vitamins eat healthy and try and reduce stress levels.

I hope this will help, would love to keep in touch on this site as i start injectables next month having 1st cycle of iui in july.

I just wanted to wish you luck and I will say a prayer for you! You sound like u have a positive attitude about all of this! I can't say about getting pregnant after the fact I already had 2 children before I got my ileostomy but wanted to tell you to keep chatting here and updating on your status and I pray everything works out!

Thank you lifeintrrupted for ur welcome and prayers. I feel this is a turning point in my life and I'm glad to have people to talk to.
I must add we had been tryin 4 less than a year but cause of my concerns scar tissue, lack of obsorbin vitamins nd my age my gp carried out sum blood test check I was ovulating b4 refering us to fertility clinic. With in 6 months I'd seen gyn, had test that checks if tubes r blockd which can sumtimes happen anyway But this tests wher all clear so wher my husbands sperm tests etc. So we r call unexplained infertility.
So I'm keepin calm relaxed and prayin we get a blessing this year.

Hi everyone. I am new and appreciate everyone for sharing their experiences. It made me feel that I am not alone. I was an Ulcerative Colitis sufferer and finally had the surgery in Sept2010 and my reversal Nov.2010 and never felt better (thank God!). I am 29 soon to be 30 and my husband and I still have not concieved after trying for four months! I was able to concieve twice but I was very ill and lost both pregnancies one at 6 weeks and the other was 6 months!!! Now that I have my health back there is nothing in this world I want more than a baby of my own. It gets real hard everyone around me is pregnant or has children and I have been married for 7 years. I had my surgery through a lap. procedure so i wont build much scar tissue and i had the hsg test showing both tubes are clear. i also had my hormones and everything checked and all is good. a doctor put me on 50mg of clomid which made me hyper stimulate so it was concluded that i do not need anything but patience and God to make it happen. is there something that happend that i do not know during the surgery that compromised my fertility. i am so confused. i hear some people say no it wont and other people saying it does. ahhhhhhhhhh sigh!

hi california girl,
i'm sorry to hear about you losing both pregnancies :( how aweful for you. i don't know much about the subject, maybe b/c i havn't even tried to get pregnant since my surgery. what i know is that women do get pregnant after this kind of surgery and go through pregnancy and birth fine. i'm just bumping your question again in hopes someone esle who has more info notices this and may help with advice. I recently about a month ago had a total colectomy, and to my sup rise just found out i am pregnant, what worried me, is being I am over a month along that must mean I was pregnant during my surgery?, and all the medications i was taking for pain and so forth.. not even knowing i was pregnant, has anyone else experienced this issue?
