Moving the stoma?

Hi everyone -- I'm new to these message boards but am desperately looking for someone who's had stoma revision surgery (where they move the ileostomy to the other side of the abdomen). I'm having it done Oct. 31 (Halloween -- creepy!), and I don't know what to expect. I'm guessing it's basically like ileostomy surgery the first time?

I'm also scared I made a bad decision to have the surgery ... it was my choice, since I've had hernia problems off and on for two years. They said I could let it go, but that it could get worse, and I didn't want to risk it. I'm getting married next year and want to be OK.

Any advice? Experiences? THANKS!

I just had mine moved from the right to the left because of disease, didn't have a choice. The old ostomy opening takes a while to heal, but it's easy to maintain, no major wound care.

Just make sure you have someone help you mark the new site for your stoma. My surgeon got upset when I asked him if I should mark it, he took it personally like he couldn't figure it out and I gave in and didn't mark it. Well, I should have. My old stoma was in the perfect place, I just wanted it moved to the exact opposite place, and he made it way too high (now it interferes with the waist band of my clothes) and too close to the center (where it interfered with my open incision from the surgery and caused an infection and another open wound). Now I'm facing another surgery to have it corrected one day, and I'm not looking forward to going through that again because his ego was too big.

Sorry, a bit of a rant, but now you know how important it is. GET IT MARKED, and make sure your surgeon understands the importance of placing where the mark is.

My stoma for an ileostomy is starting to retract. It's been 6 years since my surgery. How difficult is it to be moved to a new location or can surgery be preformed to extend the original stoma<
