Anyone ever taken these for rectal spasms? If so, how long did it take to work? I had a total colectomy in August and they kept my rectum in order to form a J-pouch later on, but have been having horrible spasms. The surgeon told me that a discharge was normal, but mine is getting bloodier so I called my GI last week and they wrote a script for Belladonna & Opium suppositories. I started it last Wednesday and am still not feeling any better and doc won't be in till Tuesday. Any help would be much appreciated!

I had a TC and I did not experience spasms. Are you cramping and bleeding? This sounds horrible and painful. I wish I had words of wisdoms for you but I don't.

Here is some information about the suppositories...This medication is used to treat moderate-to-severe pain from spasm of the tubes that drain urine from the kidneys to the bladder (ureters). Belladonna/opium suppositories are used when regular pain medicines are not working well or when it would be better to take narcotic pain medicines less often. This product contains 2 medicines; opium (a narcotic pain medicine) and belladonna (an anticholinergic). The opium helps to relieve pain, and belladonna helps to relieve spasms.

Are you getting any relief from the belladonna? If not, you need to contact your doctor and tell him/her that this is NOT WORKING FOR YOU. I do not care that today is Sunday...you need to call. You can't continue to suffer like this and you have been on this medication since Wednesday. This medicine sould work immediately and you should have some relief within an hour or two. You have been on this for 4 days...it is apparently not working. Please call your Dr and let me know what they say.

Yes, I remember taking them, but I had CD in my rectum and that was one of the 2 suppositories prescribed. The other was hydrocortisone & (my mind just went blank). Doggone it! Uhhhhh maybe it will come to me later. Anyway my pharmacist had to make them just for me... like a true apothecary does. The b&o supp. should be giving you some relief. Call the dr --- he has a service, and believe me, you pay for it in the long run.

Thanks for the replies. I just feel like I'm wasting my time and hurting my A*@. I keep thinking that my flare never came under control, because I was doing the cortisone enemas and IV steroids and they didn't work so they had to do the surgery. I just hope they can get this under control, my family doctor says that my anemia is getting worse and I'm sure this is why. I will let you know what the GI says when I get a hold of him. Thanks again

    Well it just came to me!  The other drug was Neomyacin.  Neomyacin and    Hydrocortison suppositories.

Called my GI and they prescribed Canasa suppositories and I am finally feeling some relief! Came just in time, I had a hard time breathing the other night (pain in my left rib cage with every breath) finally went to the ER the next day and they say I have pneumonia! Could not imagine having those horrible spasms with this rib pain!! I wish I could give the B&O suppositories back to the drugstore so they would have them if someone else needed them. Seems like such a waste to throw them away! Thanks for the replies and concern!!

So glad that you found something to give you a bit of relief.  No wonder you felt pretty yucky - pneumonia on top of it all.  SUre hope that you feel better.  Get lots of rest.
