shoulder surgey done!  typing w/ 1 hand ...  all is ok, numbing wearing off now, paim just beginning.  thank goodness for hydrocodone!!!  and phenergan.

yeah Glad you made ot ok.  I hope the pain is controlable.  Are you going to be in the chat room tomorrow?  Iwill see you there if so Ralph

Thanks for the update. I'm so glad your surgery went well. I was thinking about you all day yesterday and was surprised to see your posts so soon after surgery. They must've given you some good pain meds! :-) Take care and try to take it easy.

Peggy, I did not expect to see you posting messages so soon after your surgery. You are amazing! I am so glad that your surgery is OVER and you can begin your recovery. Did you get to change your bag on Friday? Please take the weekend to rest your shoulder. I hope the pain does not stay for long and you can get back to normal.

lots of pain w/ slightest of movement today. surgeon called me this afternoon to check on my pain. [one handed typing sucks] i told him it hurt even when i moved my hand. he said get the big,bulky bandage off, put bandaids on te stitches, & get ice packs on it asap since i can't take oral anti-inflammatory drugs. taking vicodin & phenergan every 4 hrsw. phenergan is good anti-nauseabpill but makes most dopey but kinda wires me. so long as it helps pain, i don't care. home therapy/movement starts this evening & i know its gonna hurt like he**!!!

If the Phenergan makes you sleepy, ask for Zofran (generic: Ondansetron). It's considered the Cadillac of these drugs and doesn't make you sleepy. I've been on it off and on for a long time, and my father-in-law takes it every day, works great.

If you're still in pain, maybe take more of the Vicodin (check with your doctor first) just make sure you don't take more than 1000 mg. of the acetaminophin in a dose. If your Rx reads 7.5/750 or 5/500 the larger number on the right is the acetaminophin dose.

UPDATE: My hydrocodone RX reads 7.5/500, generic for Lortab, "take 1-2 every 4 hours" . I have been trying to use the ice to help with the pain more than the drugs. However, I do take my drugs just before taking shower, and just before manipulation exercises. Hubby has to do the manipulation still. I have really good mobility this soon after surgery as long as hubby does it. Doesn't hurt too awful bad except for one area which is the initial movement. Almost feels like it is catching, but that will "smooth" out with use and therapy. Still have lots of swelling, and my skin is the prettiest shades of black and blue I've seen but the 3 little poke holes/stitches look great. Shower felt great after all was said and done! And I have just enough use in the shoulder to empty my pouch with very little pain - and that was my biggest concern prior to surgery. I don't think I am ready to change my appliance yet so I hope this one lasts me a few more days! I can't believe how tender I am clear across the back of my neck and even my good shoulder. "It only hurts for a little while!"

Thank you all for your good thoughts. I'm now able to use my right hand to type, with little discomfort. Good therapy too just to move that arm/hand! Still making horrible messes in the kitchen whenever I try to do anything with food. Hubby ordered us breadsticks and pizza last night so I could eat with my hands! It was good too.

Keep up the good work!! I did a lot of physical therapy too. For me, in the beginning, it was absolutely necessary to take the pain meds. I think the need for physical therapy trumps the downside of the pain meds.
My family and I are praying for your continuing speedy recovery.

Richard and all,

Thank you for all your well wishes!! Emptying my ostomy bag has been a challenge, but sure makes me move my arm! No real problems but still petty painful.

Each time we do "therapy", I'm able to move it a little more. Today I went about 8 hrs between pain pills, but I was still doing the ice packs. Right now I am playing catch up on the pain this evening, so I think I won't go that long w/o pain pills again... obviously, I must still need them.

My DH was telling me this evening that the doc cleaned out a substantial amount of arthritis out of my shoulder as well as the bone spur.

Thanks again everyone... I think I'm gonna live!!!! :)
