Change in stoma

Hi,

As usual, I am worrying about my situation. I have noticed that my stoma has grown longer in the last 3 weeks. In addition, where I use to measure 1 inch around with my stoma guide- I now use 1 1/4 inch. I've also noticed a white tinge to the end of the stoma. However, I have not been having any unusual pain. I don't see my doctor until next week. I just wanted to hear what ya'll had to say.

P.S. I have been shamed about letting my husband change my appliance. I do it myself now. yeah

Hello Jennie,

Is your stoma just "flexing" itself? Is it always longer or does it move in and out? You will see this movement as it contracts to move stuff through. Not unusual. And it could be measuring larger around during that time as well. So, before you get upset, be sure it looks the same all the time, and that you aren't just catching it while it is "flexing" it's muscles!

I am proud of you taking on the challenge of changing your appliance by yourself. Good For You!!! It is always good to have a backup (I should be talking -- my DH has never changed or assisted in changing mine). So, who does the better job - you or your husband? (hehehe)

A call to your ET nurse would not be out of the question to ease your mind, esp with a holiday weekend approaching quickly. Do keep us posted tho.

My husband does the better job OF COURSE. He is somewhat of a perfectionist. Oh Well.

I called my surgeon's office, and the PA said I should live until they see me next Thursday. He said I shouldn't worry about the anemic end of ole Jillie. A deep red or purple color would be something to be concerned about he said. The change in size is a bother to me because I don't want a prolapse requiring more surgery.(ugh) Will post later!

Having had an ostomy for 18 years now, I can tell you without hesitation that your stoma is going to change in appearance from time to time. In fact, I can't think of any bodypart that hasn't changed in the last 18 years, LOL. As long as your stoma stays relatively pink, doesn't show signs of fistulas, obstruction or prolapse, your doin' just fine. It's normal to be a little paranoid about every little change in appearance after you've had your surgery. I know I was.

P.S.- Though my wife has never changed my appliance, she has emptied for me a few times when I was in the hospital. Now that's love!!!

Tell me about it! I had a pretty rough(and long!) hospital stay, as this was emergency surgery. My fiance stayed by my side day and night for a month. Never left my side. Helped me to empty the bag as well, with no reservations whatsoever. I'm blessed!

AMEN to that!!!  There are fews positive things I can say about gravity at this stage of my life!  tongue
