History

Do you ever wonder who was the first person to think that you could take a person's large intestine out and attach a bag and htey would be ok?  and how on earth did that person even know to do that? Shaz's website has an article about the history of ostomies, and it is very informative, but it obviously doesnt' tell what the person was thinking.  I wonder about weird things like that sometimes, this is off topic, but i also think, who thought it was a good idea to eat a chicken egg? i mean, soemone looked at it and thought "i think i will eat this thing that fell out of a chicken's butt."

but i also wonder about how it was even possible to have such a major surgery performed hundreds of years ago, without the benefits of modern technology. 

This is the nerd in me coming out, but does anyone have any thoughts?

I heard that Napoleon had an ostomy, and he lived in the late 1700's. Could you imagine how awful the appliances must've been over 200 years ago?

If you look at this picture of him, it looks like his ostomy bag is full!! LOL

the plumbing thing actually does make sense.
what they said one woman did was keep guaze over it. There was a page on there that was supposed to show the old appliances but it didn't work. But i do remember there is a woman on a site somewhere, that either she has had one since like 1930 or her MOm did, and it was literally just a piece of plastic wrap on the side.
