Hi Rockchick, your friends condition sounds like it COULD be something called Plantar Fasciitis which is a condition that affects the ball of tissue under the heel plate and the tendon that leads to the toes . It will often cause pain in the sole of the foot also and even the toes. It can affect one or both feet and can be caused by overweight, standing for long periods, inactivity. Treatment can be by a variety of means including massage therapy, rest, stretching, weight loss, motion control running shoes [whatever they are] anti inflammatory medication, and in extreme cases cortisone injections [ very painful not recommended]. In a minority of cases it doesn't go away. The reason I know this is that I have just been diagnosed with the bloody thing. Painful yes. Of course your friend may have something entirely different.
I hope this is helpful.
