My mother has had pd for 20 years. She recently had a uti and very dehydrated. can the dehydration cause swallowing problems. Before this she was eating fine. Now she holding the stalevo in her mouth which i think is making the clenching worse. Its like she has forgotten how to eat but she drinks large gulps of water. Thanks for your help.

My mom has stopped swallowing her pills for the past 4+ years now. I crush everything including Stalevo which I know I am not suppose to but I do. When she was on too high a dose of Stalevo she was clenching and grinding but once I lowered it she was fine. Now she does it whenever I give her any dose of Sinemet. It's a mystery!

UTI can cause confusion. Once that is cleared up she will probably go back to normal.

One thing that helps some people who have swallowing issues is to use a straw. That doesn't address the initial issue of clenching the teeth, etc ... but may help once past that.

Yes my mom drinks mostly out of a straw but she will slurp very hard and choke from that. Drinking from a straw prevents food from being washed away from her teeth so I try to have her drink from a cup after she eats to wash it all down.

Grinding is from feeling tension in the mouth for my mom. That is medication caused for her but then again when she's scared she will bite down too.
