Is pd inherited?

I heard someone say in this forum that PD can be inherited. Is this true? My dad has it and is in the hallucination stage right now, sadly, however, no one else in our family has it.

I am wondering, however, if my siblings and I are at risk?

What do the rest of you out there know about this issue?

My Mom has PD and I have wondered the same thing.  From what I have read there is no strong evidence that it is hereditary.  But I am very interested to see what other people know.

Thank you for your response. We'll just wait and see what others have been told or have read. I am hoping this is not an inherited condition although I have heard that it can be....

My dad has had parkinsons for 6 years, how about your parent?

My Mom was just diagnost in July.  By the time she was diagnost her symptoms were quit severe.  It scared me because it happened so fast.  It was like one month she was fine and then BAM!  She is taking Requip but I think she should be on Sinemet too.........we go to the Neurologist again next month.  What symptoms does your Dad have?

Is PD inherited?  Good question.  From everything that I have read and talking with my neurologist- there is a 5 - 10% chance of inheriting PD from a family member.  The odds increase if multiple family members develop PD.   I have young  on-set Parkinson's and my father developed Parkinson's later in life, age 69.  Whether I directly inherited my PD from my father is an open for debate, but the neurologist feels that I probably inherited the predispostion for it.  Being predisposed to having PD does not necessarily mean that you will go on to develop full blown PD, but a catalyst of some type (be it environmental or etc.) may trigger the on-set.

10% increased risk is the figure used for direct line relatives of those DX with Pd.There currently is no evidence that there is a genetic tie in.Perhaps the same envirmental,or medical conditions that your relative was subjected to is the same situation you are subject to,and is going to be a factor in 10% of cases.genetic studies are currently underway.I'm involved in one at Mass. General,but any conclusions are at best a generation away.So in conclusion, to this long winded post,I would say don't worry about it just enjoy life.Ed

Thanks so much for the responses on this. Sounds like there is a small risk possibly. I agree that you have to just enjoy life in whatever state you are in. Welcome other thoughts and info on chances of children coming down with pd after a blood parent is diagnosed. Thanks again.

my dad lived with PD for close to ten years it took a couple years for him to get the right balance of medication and after he did he lived close to normal life ,of course he still had alot of the symptoms and it did slow him down but he did everything the same as he did before just took a little more time.He passed away two years ago from hosp[ital error after operation on heart ..
but it worries me about inheriting from him as we are identical to each other minus the age difference of course and I get slight tremmors in my arm it just scares me as I am only 32 and well you see what i am getting at..
