When my granfather died of Parkinson's years ago, he reponded to none of the meds at time (8yrs.) including non-approved drugs in trial because of my father's and uncles' secruity levels in the drug dept. of Loyala University where they are employed. They believe his first symptom was a simply a slow down in his walk (it was barely noticeable to most of my family) and the developing diesase seemed slow over the next 2 yrs. Suddenly it sped up and they began agressive treatment. He was alive, not walking, sitting, although he could eat and talk. He only remembered a few of us and then odd evnts. The last I spoke to him (he and I have always been very close) he talked about
taking my son to see thebaby elephant.
There is no family history but him. His father and brother were also Mentally Ill like my grandpa. I am the only one wh is sick of his children or grandchildren, although my illness is more like his brother's from what I can gather. I have a much more severe grouping of illnesses. My granfather suffered from an atypical form of bipolar II. He could not tolerate serotinin based drugs like me. That means no SSRIs or anything that fiddles much increasing serotonin. Tricyclics have no effect. (these are all antidepressants.) SO like the others before I take lable -high dose of Parnate, an MAOI, about 120mg a day. I can take more if I gain weight. The normal dose 30mg a day. Do MAOI's have any relation to parkinsons? There is very little research on them since few people take them due to there toxicity, but I want to know. I cannot stop the meds I take, but I may be able to add an anti-parkinsons med . My doctor mentioned doing this over the summer. It is dangerous in regards to MAOI and I would do under ICU care, but I haven't decided.
