Drop foot and wrist freezing..part of PD?

My mother was diagnosed 3 years ago with PD. She was admitted to the hospital for dehydration and released 3 days later, went to nursing home rehab for therapy and has only gotten worse. She no longer walks and she now has foot drop and her left wrist is extremely painful. Therapy is discharging her and she will be staying in this facility as a resident. My question is this, the therapist told me yesterday that they would like to put braces on her legs to staighten them out and also another for the feet and wrist. I don't understand why at this time they would decide to do this when I have tried to get them to address this problem weeks ago. Is it feasible to think that these would work? She is in so much pain already and I hate to see her go through more. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for any input you might have.

HI and Welcome I looked up the most common SX of PD and this is what I found
No mention of wrist freezing but it mentions


Foot Drag

abnormal gait
decreased arm swing
excessive salivation
feelings of depression or anxiety
general slowness of movement
increase in dandruff or oily skin
lack of facial expression (hypomimia)
less frequent blinking and swallowing
lowered voice volume (hypophonia)
slight foot drag
slow reflexes if pushed off balance
small cramped handwriting (micrographia)
stiffness of limbs
stooped posture
tremor when resting

Hiwkycat, thanks for the reply. I just realized that I didn't state that mom's hospitalization was just 3 weeks ago and at that time she walked and didn't have problem with wrist. It was very badly bruised at that time and very tender xray didn't show a break but the problem still persist. I guess I just didn'texpect her condition to deteriorate so quickly in the course of six weeks, while in the nursing home rehab. Maybe I'm just not realistic about how sudden PD can change course. I've got to say that I have had several issues with mom's care at this facility but I suppose I just have to continue to monitor things.

Do you have any knowledge of them changing meds??

It gives you their status type of care ect.........

My mother had a stroke 8yrs. ago and her Parkinson's started then also. She and dad lived in Florida for the past 16yrs. but we had to move them back to Ohio so we and take care of them. Dad is the sole caretaker and he wants it that way. He has a hip that needs to be replaced but won't have is done because of his "responsibilities". Their neighbors are great....bring in food and their mail when Dad is down. I help as much as I can but I have had 4 spinal surgeries and have a plate in my neck and had to quit my job as a nurse. I have seen her deteriorate a lot over the past 3mon. It is so sad to watch. She has osteoperosis and fell and broke her nose and wrist at the same time. She "forgets" to use her walker and her shoulder hurts so her cane doesn't help much. They really need live in help. If Dad gets sick I go stay for a few days and things get a little better then. I clean in the middle of the night so they don't get upset that I am doing it. I will say a prayer for you and your family.

I'm sorry that I've neglected replying to everyone but I've been dealing with several health issues of my own the past few months. How I wish things were different. God has not only carried my mom through this journey but now I see that He is also carrying me! Boy does He have big shoulders!! This is a wonderful forum for all of us and a source of encouragement and help when we sometimes feel so alone. Keep your head high and know that there is One who truly cares about you and your situation!
