My aunt was prescribed Wellbutron for depression ten years ago. Eight years later she was diagnosed with Parkinson's. I know that Wellbutron is used to treat depression associated with Parkinson's, but I wonder whether the Parkinson's actually derived from the Wellbutron. Has anyone ever heard that Wellbutron and similar medications can cause Parkinson's?
Thank you.

You will find that many Parkinson's patients first present with an variety of psychiatric sypmtoms like depressions, anxiety, chrnic insominia and aggitation before they display the classic movement problems like tremors. In reading about
Parkinson's, you fequently see notations that anywhere betweeen 40 - 80% of patients have comorbid psychiatric problems like depression associated with their Parkinson's. The reason often sited is that fact that both Parkinson's and depression are directly related to neurochemical levels within the brain. As these chemicals and their corresponding receptors sites change and or die symptoms occur. I highly doubt that the Wellbutrin caused her Parkinson's. Most likely she had a depressive stated due to pre-Parkinson's and her tremor had yet to present itself. Many Parkinson's patients require constant treatment for depression. I wish her well.
