My mother, 76, was diagnosed with Parkinson(ism) less than two months ago. For a few years she has been slowing down, and we thought it was just due to aging. We first started noticing bigger changes last year, but my Mom doesn't much like doctor visits and put off seeing a neurologist for many months.
At the time of her appointment, she was still living independently, and though "down" in mood was still engaged. She has never taken medications before, and wanted to try a naturopathic approach to her PD. So we saw an ND. But not only have those treatments had no effect, she has gone steeply downhill in the last two weeks--no motivation, uncontrollable crying, barely eating and barely moving. We are now going to order medication ASAP. I have two questions:
1) I thought PD was something that unfolded gradually over years or even decades. Why is my Mom's condition declining literally by the day? This feels like a life/death situation right now and my siblings and I are freaking out.
2) Sinemet (the drug she will likely start on) is supposed to increase dopamine, which to my knowledge helps motor skills, motivation, and mood. So why is DEPRESSION also listed as a possible side effect? My Mom doesn't need any more of THAT.
Would appreciate anyone sharing your experience. I can view answers this evening but will be away from the computer for the next week, staying with my Mom. Thanks.
