Any one that has used trichloroethylene {TCE} over a long period of time.
there is a link between trichloroethylene and PARKINSON'S

Many ex serviceman from 1965 to about 1995 used TCE for cleaning parts, aircraft and equipment. THIS WAS THE MOST USED SOLVENT IN THE MILTARY.

Also people that worked in Dry Cleaning Shops and Mechanics that used a product called Safety Klean THAT CAME IN BARRELS THAT HAD A WASH SINK THAT SET ON THE BARREL AND BOTH WERE PAINTED RED.

TCE has been linked to neurological disorders, auto immune disorders Parkinson's, and cancers.

I used trich as an engineering apprentice on a daily basis from 1968 - 1972 whilst working as an apprentice fitter in precision engineering.

My father also ran a hand laundry from the mid 50's to the early 60's although he does not have PD but he did have a heart valve replacement when he was 52.

I was diagnosed with PD in February 2004 aged 51.

I worked for Maxwsell House extracting caffeine from coffee to make Sanka via a chem process that used trichlor as the transfer agent. Breathed it evry day for 4-5 yrs. Developed pd at 71.Makes me wonder about the connection!

I was diagnosed a couple years ago, but, had symptoms for a while before that.  I used trichloroethylene for a couple of years cleaning ink in the late 70's, until it was band.  My skin would break open at the knuckles and my hands and arms would itch constantly.

I wondered if that exposure had anything to do with PD.

There have also been links with Hay Fever and PD as well as Ether and PD, I fall into those catagories also.

No studies I've seen can pinpoint any definative cause, other than pesticides.

I dont know if I will get an answer to this I am new here trying to find information for my father. If TCE has been linked to disorders and cancers where would I find that information?

Hello to all. Many thanks to augoldminer for starting this topic. I served in the USMC from 1980-1984. While on active duty, from October 1981 to June 1984, I was exposed to “trichloroethylene (TCE)” and other contaminants found in both the ground water and drinking water at Camp Lejeune North Carolina https://clnr.hqi.usmc.mil/clwater/index.aspx If you lived or worked at Camp Lejeune between the 1950s and 1987 and you have significant health issues, you need to register at the above site and take action to be a part of the tort claim.
As a civilian, I was also further exposed to TCE and other Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), while working at the Naval Air Warfare Center Indpls, Hughes Aircraft Indpls, and Raytheon Technical Services at Indianapolis IN. My employment for these agencies was at the same physical location currently occupied by Raytheon Technical Services (6125 E 21st St. Indianapolis, IN 46219).
I received a diagnosis of “Early Onset Idiopathic Parkinson's disease” during the summer of 2000 (at age 37) by my neurologist. I first became symptomatic during the summer of 1996 (age 34), at a time when I was otherwise in excellent health. In May 2003, I had to quit working entirely because of the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Consequently, I began receiving SSDI (100%) in Oct. 2003.
I have been seeking legal representation for quite some time now, but for whatever reasons it is difficult to find. I have received the paper work to file the claim, but I do not feel comfortable filing it without legal representation.

Trichloroethylene is a cleaning solvent that was used to clean military weapons during the Gulf War. There are reports associating exposure to this solvent with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Kasarskis EJ et al. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, 2008 Sep 16:1-7, Clinical aspects of ALS in Gulf War Veterans), and also with a neurologic syndrome resembling Parkinson's disease (Gash DM. et al. Ann Neurol. 2008 Feb;63(2):184-92. Trichloroethylene: Parkinsonism and complex 1 mitochondrial neurotoxicity).

FYI ... I don't know whether trichloroethylene is included in this study, but the Department of Defense (DOD) has an on-going study of Parkinson's-related issues in the military. The program is called the Neurotoxin Exposure Treatment Parkinson's Research (NETPR) (previously known as Neurotoxin Exposure Treatment Research Program or NETRP). It uses federal funds which must be voted on and approved each year. Parkinson's Action Network (PAN), the national advocacy organization for Parkinson's disease, strongly supports this program. ADHaudio. My husband was also exposed to TCE and other chemicals in the service. He has a 100% SC disability for parkinson's. We did not have legal representation, but did ALOT of research. Send an email and we can send you the information and let you know how we presented our claim to VA.

Just talked with a friend whose father (age 72) was recently diagnosed with PD. He used TCE extensively while he worked at Ford. The list grows again.

My name is Bryan,
I just read your comments on Parkinson's and the VA. Can you also send me the info you are talking about. I was recently diagnosed with PD. The VA has denied my claim. I was a Boatswains Mate and was consistently using these chemicals. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a strong automobile carburetor spray cleaner called CYCLO. I read the inredients but it does not say TCE, just other chemicals. I used it extensively for cleaning parts bins. Anybody know if CYCLO has TCE in it? Is TCE a combination of other chemiicals?

Hello. I was diagnosed with PD a couple of years ago and am currently being evaluated by the VA for Agent Orange exposure in 'Nam (Bluewater navy veteran, 1971-72).

I was also exposed to trichloroethylene on a daily basis as a field service engineer for IBM from 1973-1985. We used what was called "Gold Can" cleaner to clean electromechanical data processing equipment like keypunches, Selectric typewriters, card punches, etc.

My Dad worked as a customer engineer (CE) for IBM from 1962-1997. He is now 75 years old and I have been taking care of him since 2002 due to his PD/DLB symptoms. My Dad was the typewriter, printer, and card punch machine guru during the 60's and 70's. He use to practically bathe in the Gold Can (IBM Cleaning Fluid) from the elbows down on a daily basis to get his job done. He even invented a spring hook tool for IBM in 1966 which saved them $M/year in man hours repairing hundreds of machine types.   He always had 2 or 3 (1) gallon cans of the gold stuff with a stack of bulk white rags in the trunk of his car.   His pension is $19k/year and covers only a fraction of the cost of his care.   I am having to put him in the local veterans home because his condition is sliding fast.   I wonder if IBM can chip in a little to help him in his last few years.

Hi I am a 38 year old man who worked for Kay Dee Engineering Plastics Shipley as a Degreaser and Bonder around 2003 using Trichloroethlene. I was not informed of the true possible health effects. I was instructed to use it neat and wipe down metal inserts that were too large to go in to the degreasers using a bucket and rag. After around two years I began to have tremors, mental confusion, sever fatigue, dizzy spells, memory loss, spasms and banging in my head. I was examined by the company Doctor who had a diploma in occupational medicine DR Adrian Lee, Calverley medical centre, 43 upper care lane calverley leeds LS28 5PL he said it was severe anxiety and he was only aware of the chemical causing narcosis and chronic exposure causing polyneuropathy. He said i was in no fit state to work like this and put on the sick. My symptoms have continued to worsen and I have been unable to work for 8 years. Conclusion: Kay Dee did not tell me TCE was poisonous because they knew it could effect me the way it has. So sorry to hear of your health problems, Polli. Now would be a good time for you to begin legal action(s). Remember that you legally have only 2 years from the time you suspected a connection between your exposure to TCE and your poor health to file a claim. Please note that this is NOT legal advice, because I am not a lawyer.
Also, I would advise you to see a Movement Disorder Specialist--a neurologist.

Hi

I have already filed a legal claim that was strenuously denied even though i complained to the company manager numerous times about feeling funny from the chemicals. I visited the actual company doctor whilst employed there complaining of feeling ill from TCE. Ive seen a neurologist Dr R N Hakin who sent me for a MRI scan, That came back entirely normal. I contacted the health and safety executive sheffield and leeds they sent me to (Professor Peter G Blain Toxicologist) http://www.ncl.ac.uk/biomedicine/research/groups/profile/peter.blain He told me i should not believe what i read about this toxic chemical and sent me to a psychologist who sent me to a Cognitive behavioural therapist all around 2005. My health has continued to deteriorate over the last 7 years.

Professor Peter G Blain Toxicologist would not reply to letters from my solicitor or me when asked if TCE had caused my illness.

Recently In 2013 i learned that professor Peter blain wrote to the health and safety executive Claire Mason Sheffield and they were unable to comment on my exposures at Kay Dee even though they had visited the factory in 2002 and several issues were found in the Degreasing and bonding area. He also wrote to my GP after he had consulted his college Robert Jefferson and there consensus was sever anxiety. I was never sent a copy of this letter.

On the 15th may 2013 I wrote to Dr Adrian Lee and Professor Peter Blain asking why they played down and lied about the possible health effects of TCE. Dr Adrian Lees practice manager has received my letter and has given it to Adrian Lee to respond. He has not responded so far. Peter blain has not acknowledged my letter or responded so far either.

Conclusion:

TCE poisons you. Once I was ill from it my employers and the occupational health professionals played down the possible health affects. The general practitioners I have seen have no clue about chemical poisoning and want none or as little as possible to do with you.
