Now my next hurdle is the dreaded cath removal. I've read on here that some of you have said that it was simply no big deal. Then I have two friends tell me that it is awful.  So, how bad is it?  For example, when they pulled the jackson-pratt drain out of my side the day after surgery, it was fairly uncomfortable.  It was bizarre to feel this tube deep in my abdomen sucking it's way out my side. It hurt, yes, but was more unsettling than anything. When it was over, the sensation faded in a few minutes.  Would anyone else describe the drain removal along those lines?  So then, is the cath removal easier or harder than the drain removal?

More uncomfortable/painful, but, over just as quickly. Not bad enough to lose any sleep over.

Hi. Gordy is right.  Both the drain and the cath just felt unusual and did not hurt me.

I had little discomfort with either the Jackson-Pratt drain or the catheter removal.  But everyone's different.  The main thing is that it's over quickly.

I had No pain at all. Just a strange feeling for about two seconds.

I felt no pain at all. Only a quick "jerk" that felt weird more than anything.

Thinking and waiting to have it out was not woth the reality of the event, turns out it's much ado about nothing!HAppens so fast, you almost miss it, I had NO pain, jsut a strange feeling as it was pulled out, last all of two seconds! Sir back and don't look and think about how glad you will be to become "unpluged"!

thanks for all your replies. I am soooo sick of this thing. It doesn't hurt in the least to have in...just a major pain. today I forgot I had hooked the bag on a knob of a kitchen counter, walked away, the door swung open so hard that stuff inside clattered all over the floor. sigh...there is no dignity! It comes out tomorrow. Apparently, my doc's nurse will fill me with water, have me try to hold it in, as I let the water start to flow, she pulls it out with the water. I would be willing to have the jackson pratt pulled again if it gets rid of this bag!!

bought my pads tonight...the next stage has begun - the damp pants part of the game.

For me, the pain of the drain removal was worse than the catheter withdrawal. Mind you, I wouldn't do either one for the fun of it, but like the others have said it's not too bad and over quickly! Don't lose any sleep over it. Good Luck!

about as bad as it gets is goose bumps when you Oh) and shimmy a little. I have had four removed in the last two months having both kidney surgery in November and two prostrate surgeries in the same day in December.

Hey! They yanked it yesterday! Yahoo! The stuff they do is crazy, I have to say. She had me lay back on the table, with the catheter, filled my bladder with sterile water then drew it out to see if it was clear or not - blood, bloodclots, etc. Then she filled it again, told me to cough three times and pulled it out. It felt weird. I gotta say. A slight stinging, (or someone said an electrical shiver) maybe is all that it was. No where near as bad as the stinging that is felt if soap gets up there! But, no, it doesn't hurt. If someone were distracting me, I probably would not have noticed it at all. In fact, having the catheter get bumped while inside me was worse.

I'm just telling all this so that the next poor sucker who goes through this will have some idea of what it was like.

I think I am doing really well. I went through three pads yesterday, but was dry all night - and even am dry still this morning. BUT I know when the swelling goes down, that's when the waterworks really start, so I'm not to hopeful yet.

Paul, I told a little white lie on my removal because I didn't want you go uneasy to the doctors office and because 3 of the 4 times my removals didn't hurt at all. But man, this last one, she yanked that thing out like she was trying to crank an old rusty lawnmower. It hurt really bad(For a brief moment) and it still hurts some when I pee after five week sbut not as bad as it did

When the swelling goes down you might not still have a problem but when you go out play it safe because I had my first sneeze yesterday and went oopps!

hahaha Well, Randy, thanks for the lie! From what i can tell, my experience was about normal. So, any guys who have still to go through it...listen to these other guys, they were right. It is not that big a deal and is so short, it is over really fast...like 1-2 secs.

Paul you are right for sure it is rare to have a problem. Interesting side note, my wife took one of them out at home(doctor approved) while talking to the nurse over the cell phone.

I cannot remember being more nervous. It went perfect. This after kidney stone surgery and before the prostate surgery

Tomorrow I go in for the Cystogram. If that goes well the catheter gets removed. This thread gives me a good idea what to expect. Thanks
