I am a newbie to this forum and had a sphicter put in me September 10,2007.  On about the middle of December my scrotum was beginning to drain and I went to the urologist to find out the cause and was told I had an absess.  When they operated he said the pump broke and they cleaned it out.  Now he says I need a new pump installed and I have a lot of questions.  I have an appointment with him on Tuesday January15 amd wonder if any of you can help me

Just curious here. The Dr. I am seeing at the OU Medical Center for my incontenance says he does about 6 AUS implants a year. He also said he probably does more of them than anyone in the state.
My question to all of the that have the AUS or have talked to you Dr. is How many AUS implants does your Dr. do in a year?

Would appreciate any info you may have.

I hope you will stay with us through this problem.  A few of us on the board who are still incontinent past the normal post op time would be very grateful if you continue to post as you learn more about your situation.  You are in a position to help us to understand our real options.  Thank you for your help.  And may you come through this problem with a successful outcome.

I want to get info as well as keep you informed as to what is happening in my case.  I did have the artificial sphicter put in and after three months the pump broke.  The urologist wanted to put in a new pump immediately but i did not want that because i wanted more info.  I am going to see doctor tomorrow and ask him some questions.  I would like to see the broken pump and see what the manufacturer has to say about it.  I don't know how many of these unit this dioctor has installed but i am going to ask him.  I don't know where the switches are to turn on and off.  I do have a catheter in my abdomin and want to know if this thing operates properly why the catheter can't be removed.  If i get the proper information i do intend to have it correctd.  I will keep you all posted if you are interested in hearing about it.  By the way i am 88 years young and i suppose many of you wonder how long i want to live but my body is i good shape and i think my mind is OK.  you hav to make that choice.  Please reply

I did meet with my doctor and he said the pump broke and that's what caused the abcess.  When I was operated for that he cut the tubes leading to pump and closed me up again.  Because there is only one manufacturer of AUS you don't have any choice as to where to go.  I have opted to have another operation on February 4,2008 to replace the whole unit.  He said on of my problems was with the amount of radiation I had my bladder isn't all that strong.  What I now have is a catheter in my belly and that will have to stay there.  The pump on the unit i had never drained my bladder fully and so i don't know if the new on will or not.  If it does not operate fullt to drain my bladder i wll have to use the catheter tube to pee.  I don't like that but i have learned to adjust ot whatever i have left and make the best of it.  I enjoy my life and want to continue until the Lord calls me.  Good luck to all of you.  Please contact me for any info i can give.  I will report again after the next operation.

Hi to all

I had the new sphincter put in last Tuesday and everything went  Was home the next day with some discomfort but not serious.  For those  of you who don't know the last unit i had malfuctioned because the pump became inoperative.  The second operation was less stressful because i knew what was to happen.  I now have to wail 4 to 6 weeks before the unit can be activated.  I have a catheter in my abdomin and have had that in for about for about five months.  Hoping that the new unit will allow me to have cathter removed.  That would be a real blessing.  I am feeling great and and look forward to having things straighten out

Jerry- Good luck to you! I am getting an AUS in mid-April (the first, and hopefully the last). I've heard great things about them and can't wait to get it switched on at the end of May.
