Looking for people with experience of Robotic surgery with Dr. Mani Menon at the HEnry Ford Hospital, Detroit, MI.

I haven't but I can tell you that the top six extremely talented surgeons using the robotic method would include him. He was the first to use it and he has over 2000 LRP's to his credit. If you are able to retain him, you can stop looking.

I underwent the robot with Dr. Menon in Sept. 2006.  I was 52, gleason 6 (3+3), PSA 5.6.

I was very impressed with the entire experience.  The only problem I've experienced post surgery is with ED.

It took 10-11 months to recover function with the assistance of Viagra.  Didn't have any problem with incontenace, which, going in, was of a greater concern to me.

I don't have any regrets about my decision.

Let me know if you have any specific questions I can answer.

Probably the hardest part of the entire experience for me was the choice of treatment and place of treatment.

They are tough decisions to make at a tough point in life.

Thank you for the reply and vote of confidence. My husband's priority is the same as you implied - cancer first, continence 2nd, sex function third. That is encouraging to hear about your continence - was it back quickly? We have only a 3 hour travel time, but am curious how travel impacts the whole process. Also, curious if your cancer was contained. It is such a huge decision - I feel like the experience level is essential to the outcomes.

FairRider-My cancer was contained. I live in Florida and flew home with the catheter a few days after surgery. I didn't like the idea of traveling with the catheter but it was not a problem. The continence was back quickly for me. It was a non-issue. I am very thankful for that.
Other than fatigue and slight discomfort, I didn't feel as though I had undergone major surgery. Just get your husband to pace himself for a few weeks after the surgery.

I had my surgery by a doc who was trained by that staff in Detroit. My research in 2006 indicated that the surgical team at the Ford Center was the best and most experienced in the world at the DaVinci. I contacted them and was prepared to go to Detroit. I live near Kansas City and they ended up recommending a doc in my area who had trained at the Ford Center with Menon so I stayed here.  good luck with your decision.

We are going for a consultation this week to Vattakutti at the HEnry Ford hospital in Detroit.

Any experiences there are welcome information. Any questions we should ask other than the ones we just should generally ask before surgery?

I had the robotic procedure with one of Dr. Menons associates Dr. Peabody. You can never say the  experience was pleasurable but they did everything they could to make it tolerable. The nursing staff in recovery were very considerate and helpful. I would recommend Henry Ford to anyone thinking of having a procedure done there.
