Doubling of Ultrasensative PSA

Had DeVinci procedure 2yrs ago & pathology was great including the adjascent Lymph Nodes. PSA readings for first 18 mo. were .005-.008. Four months ago got a reading of .01  Urologist sent me to radiation oncologist for his opinion. His advice was to treat with radiation prior to a rise to .2  Upon returning to my urologist, he agreed with the radiation oncologist opinion. Yet, the urologist briefly mentioned a Scoop procedure. The way I understood, the urologist goes through the testicles & scrapes the bladder,etc. & then the PSA should go to 0.

A couple of weeks ago I had another Ultrasensative & the reading has gone to .019, meaning that it has almost doubled in 3 months. about a year ago my urologist told me that he was not concern if PSA increased a little, rather if it doubled in a short period of time. I go back Monday for a consult with urologist. Pretty sure that he will feel it is time for additional treatment.

My question is: Has any had or is familiar with the Scoop Procedure? Urologist did tell me last visit the it would leave radiation open in future.

How does the oncologist know your PSA isn't harmless tissue left behind from the prostatecomy..or is this his thought with the "scoop" procedure? Just wondering. Either way, it sounds easier to tollerate than radiation right now. Good luck to you.

Hey,  I am no expert.  I only know what I read here and learn from my uro and other places. My post surgery psa went from less than (minus).01 up to (plus).02 recently.  My doctor said that he would not consider further treatment unless my psa went up to (plus) .2

Follow the decimal point here and the plus and minus.  Your .019 is a .02 which is still considered undetectable by many testing sources

That is a much bigger jump.  Unless your doctors know something you haven't shared here, I would say there is a bit of over reaction.  I know nothing about a "scoop" procedure, but would be very cautious  without some more information from other doctors.

PSA tests can jump all over the place for reasons doctors can't even explain. So, unless you have several tests above PLUS .2 your doctor would not be following protocol to suggest further treatment.

I hear what you are saying...The radiation oncologist was the first to say that treating with radiation with a PSA that was on the rise, yet still below .2 provided the best long term results. Then when I returned to my urologist, he concurred. That is when he mentioned the Scoop Procedure.

I am not clear & hope to get further clarification on Monday. Will report back when I know more.

Do remember my urologist saying from the get go after surgery that the level rising slightly from time to time did not bother him, but the doubling effect in a short time period was cause for concern

I'm very interested in what the procedure is all about. And, I understand the Doc's concern with doubling times.

I can under stand about the doubling , but in my case I went from 0.00 to 0.04 in three months and my URO said I was doing fine and didn't schedule another PSA test for 4 months. Seems that going from 0.005 to .01 is nothing to be bothered about, although I was concerned about my PSA the URO wasn't. Uncle Dan
