I am new to this site.  Has anyone out there been using natural cures to get to thier prostate cancer and if so, what has been working for you?  I am aware of the conventional treatments and have heard mostly horror stories about the results.  I am sure that many of you here have had positive findings from your conventional treatments.  I am reviewing some of the comments here and look forward to more info for the future.  I have no symptoms of any kind other than ED which is mild and countered with Viagra.  I am on a program I started in February having tried a couple of Natural courses which did not help.  PSA jump drastically last year from 12 to 20.  I have a small, (less than one centimeter) bump on one side or the prostate which has not grown for a year and a half.

This is just my opinion - in all my research in the years since I was diagnosed with PCa I have not heard of any natural food/pill/etc. that will cure PCa.  IMHO, with your PSA steadily increasing and getting into the High range, I would want to know the Gleason (only available from a biopsy) as I feel the aggressiveness of the PCa is just as or more important than the PSA.  Eating healthy and having a healthy lifestyle is important, but I don't believe it will take care of your PCa.

I guess I have a mixed message. I actually came on board asking about alternative/complementary medicine. Soon as my biopsy came back positive, I started on essiac and a budwig type of protocol along with cutting out this and adding that. My psa dropped a tad, and left to my own devices I would have left it a while longer to see if there was a substantial response.

However...my loved ones pressed me to use the opportunity presented to me and go for traditional treatment while it had a chance of working without causing me too much grief. In essence, take the cure while it could be cured.

I'm sure that a lot of folks in this forum would say that if they could turn back the clock to where you are...if they had been blessed with catching it that early, they'd have jumped in and sought treatment right away.

I'll agree. My journey has been a right royal pain in the butt. But I have suffered far less than others, and as a result I'm reluctant to complain. I guess what I'm saying is that I've seen this beast from your perspective, and I'm really happy I took the conventional route while I could. I still use essiac, zyflamend and hi potency omega three to counteract the side effects of the radiation...but my advice to you is to take advantage of early diagnosis while it still matters.

My PCa was a fairly aggressive one but caught early (I think!). Apart from rising PSA, I had no symptoms at all -- even the initial DRE showed no lumps.

I had RRP and have no regrets. No horrible side effects, apart from ED which turns out to be not so horrible after all.

If you had a biopsy and you turned out to have an aggressive tumor, (Gleason 8-10) would you take further action -- like medical intervention? If your answer is "yes", I would urge you to have a biopsy. Knowledge is power.

And welcome to the best site on the web for patient to patient interaction. Most here have decided on medical treatment as opposed to watchful waiting and natural remedies. There is little support for natural remedy, homeopathic, or holistic remedy in the scientific community. I too had a PSA like yours at around 20. And it dropped to 18.48 then 13.8 at biopsy. The fact is that PSA fluctuates, and how it was at testing at the highest point is the PSA used for prognosis. The disease I had left me a very little window for cure. Since we are similar, I believe this applies to you as well. I had surgery, hormone therapy, and radiation therapies and still have a small window to get through. So I compliment my treatment with healthy eating and excesice. Many here won't agree with my other tool. I am a man who walks with God. I use Faith, Love and Hope, to compliment my medical treatments and diet as some cancer centers do though not mine. Some here will be vocally against you not having a biopsy, myself included, but you have a right to your beliefs. I would encourage you to get involved with all options of treatment to compliment your choice of natural remedy. Are the treatments I receive without side effects? No. But the horror I fear most is in the eyes of my wife and family. Their horror that I could die from this disease.

In wishing you well, I encourage you to ask as many questions as you can from this fine group.

my experience has been interesing. I go to The Cancer Treatment Center of America, and they integrate traditional therapy with naturopathic medicine as well as assign you a spiritual advisor. I to believe that in order to have successful response you need to cancer you do need to have a healthy balance between mind body and spirit.
Just my opinion. Welcome to healing well.

I am glad I chose definitive tx for my PCa, if natural cures worked, most of us wouldn't be on this board. I think most of them are not medically based/scientifically proven. I am happy with my tx choice. Good luck on what ever tx you go with, just be careful.

My thoughts........ I am a very optimistic person (the glass is always half full) but sometimes our optimism can outweigh what should be our natural caution. Wanting circumstances to be a certain way is no guarantee that is the way they actually are. While there are plenty of causes for an elevated PSA, given a PSA of 20 and a "bump" felt on the prostate I would most certainly opt for a biopsy and find out where I stand, and then make my decision on treatment. If apprehensive about the biopsy I would insist on being sedated.........at least once you get the results your decision would be based on knowledge, and thus be fully informed. Stay with us on the forum and research, research, research then question , question, question. Be extra careful of charlatans out there offering miracle cures (natural and otherwise) for a fistful of dollars. Just my opinion for what that's worth. Whatever your decision I certainly wish you well.

Hi, I was DX Nov '03,age 62, 1 of 8 +, gleason 3+3, psa 6.2.
I tried all the can't fail cures, fairly strict diet etc, monitored PSA monthly which hovered around 10.
Started using 'Prostasol" and later 'Quercetin +' [herbal estrogen]. this brought my PSA down to less than 1, which I maintained by varying the number of caps I took. Recent biopsy showed 3 of 10 +, 3 +4, I have decided that I have persevered long enough with the 'diet ' approach to no avail and I am going to have Brachytherapy late August. I have no regrets trying the natural remedies, but I think that the time is right for me to take more active intervention.

even though i took the conventional way out and now one year post op and doing well (ED is still a work in progress but it is progressing well)
i have read of someone on another board that used some Pepper health suplument that cured his cancer, i am not sure how real that finding is , and what is the likely hood of that happening to everyone else out there.
While i read about natural cures i came across Soy bean , pomegranate juice or supplements an some other healthy suggestions that mostly comes from the Japanese culture.

There are several naturalpathic (under a Dr.s prescription/supervision/advise) remedies used to help combat cancer. Paul's used a few extensively with both cancers. None are cures but all help the body use its own defenses. Carsinosin and Thujia are 2 that come to mind.

I read somewhere that a study had shown that the use of Selenium reduced the chances of having PCa. I guess that means you gotta use if for a while before the PCa gets ya. 

I know I like my red meat way to much.  I also like my pork chops and chicken fried.

For the last three months I have been surrounded by PCa patients while being treated at Loma Linda with proton therapy. Having seen a gamut of cases and your reported PSA I can only urge you to get a diagnosis. If you are concerned with a biopsy, and there is good reason to be concerned, chose someone who will use a pain killer as part of the biopsy and make sure they put you on an antibiotic regimen. There are risks associated with biopsies such as infections. Most of us have done well with them.

If your concern is biopsy, there is a less invasive solution but harder to find. When I was being diagnosed at the suggestion of my urologist I chose to do an endo rectal MRI. I was actually able to see the tumor within the prostate. Not all MRI machines with endo rectal coils are powerful enough to get an image with enough resolution to see a tumor. You need a machine like a GE 3T MRI machine with an endo rectal coil. The important thing to remember is there are a lot of 1.5T machines out there which have an endo rectal coil. These lower power 1.5T machines are not powerful enough to get enough resolution to see the tumor. The companies and hospitals who have these multi million dollar machines advertise them as an alternative to needle biopsies. On my way to visit the University of Florida Proton facility I stopped in Sarasota to get mine done. Please contact me if you would like their name.

Your PSA is high enough even you were to bring it down by half any doctor would be concerned. Please make sure you know what you are dealing with. This cancer is slow growing which is an advantage. However when docs treat patients their treatment changes to a very aggressive treatment when there is a PSA higher than 10.0.

Thanks to all of you for he advise and for the support. Here is where I am today. I had a psa test in Bangkok in the first part of January. PSA 20.9. This is after a couple of years of different natural remedy options that were supposed to bring the PSA back in line. No other indications of a problem however. Slightly oversized prostate but not radical and no urination problems, getting up at night not an issue, etc. Got a recommendation to a book written by a guy who lost his wife to cancer. He has become a guru of information on natural remedies and I read and followed the instructions given. After three months of the treatments in the book I now am at this point. PSA dropped to 17.4, digital exam shows prostate back to normal size, small nodule found a year and half ago which has not grown is now gone entirely. However, I now am having some urination problems that do not seem to be related to the prostate given urine test results. The urine samples according to the Dr. show high keytones and high acid content. According to him, opposite of what would be happening if the issue was prostate related. Might have something to do with the supplements I am taking. I think I am turning into a gel cap. Continuing the urine analysis and watching what is going on with the urine urges and hard starting but encouraged by the other outcomes. I am using the Budwig treatments of flax seed oil and cottage cheese, selenium, Cayenne Pepper extract (capsicum) D3, Beta Glucan 3, and a host of other supplements designed to increase the immune system responses and actually go into cancer cells and destroy them. I will keep everyone posted. I have not completely ruled out a conventional option but as long as the remedies are giving me positive responses I will follow the route I am on.

Research has shown me that the PSA is being given a negative as an indicator of cancer. I am 67 years old. The chances of me having prostate cancer approach 70% so a PSA test will naturally show up high or not at all depending. Testing for PSA in some cases indicates high count without any cancer and O in guys with cancer. If you are over 50 you have a 40% chance of having an active but slow growing cancer that will be with you until you die of old age. The physicians out there are more than excited to start poking needles into you. They often create more problems than they solve. Quality of life is a big issue for me. If I check out a little early but really enjoy the time spent I am much more in tune with that than having my body violated with scalpels and drugs. I am so very happy to have an opportunity to talk with all of you who have been so supportive and helpful to me in this quest. Cancer is not the killer it is made out to be. It is a half a million dollar piggy bank for everyone who walks through the physicians door, scalpel at the ready. I want to be able to give every chance for my body to encourage this little disease to leave of its own accord. If I miss the mark and it winds up that I have to submit to the ordinary, I will do so reluctantly. If it takes me out then I will have failed in my experiment but will have given all of you and some of the natural remedy guys some new ideas about what is possible.

I will continue to let you all know what is happening. I will go for another PSA in about ninety days. I will do another HCG test in about 60 days.

A few years ago a friend of mine almost died from sepsis as a consequence of a biopsy. Meaning the act of finding out if you are suffering from and the seriousness of the cancer is a decision with some risk. Not knowing was not an option for me so I went for a a second needle biopsy when my PSA rose to 6.3. When the biopsy results confirmed a Gleason 7 cancer and was confirmed by John Hopkins I had to go through the decision process of doing or not doing treatments.

As I changed urologist the doctor recommended I invest in a MRI-S - Endorectal Spectroscopy MRI. She recommended I only consider the most powerful machines for the best resolution. This was a 3.0 Tesla machine made by GE. As a lay person whether its GE or any of the other manufacturers of these machines I don't think it maters. It must be one of the most powerful to get the resolution in imaging. When I stepped out of the machine the tech who purposefully had told me not to let him know my pathology told me I had more than the normal biopsy samples (two biopsies) and that I had cancer in both sides of my prostate.

Not even bothering to get out of the hospital gown we walked over to the control center to look at the slides. He not only showed me the slides he took but also where the cancer was which was plainly visible to a layman. He did caution me he was only a technician and not a doctor. A few weeks later I received the doctor report with no discernible difference from the techs comments. In particular we all agreed there was no penetration of the prostate capsule. The cancer, although in the typical places found, was removed from the capsule by an adequate distance.

If I had know of this solution I would never have done a biopsy but done the MRI-S. There was comfort in knowing the cancer was contained. In particular I knew for certain no one and mixed up slides in the lab. Livinglong I only offer this experience not as a suggestion, but as an attempt to share an experience which may be of value to you or others.

I think I understand your concern and worry about treatment.  None of us wanted to do a biopsy and certainly all conventional treatments have their issues.

I did quite a bit of research regarding "watchful waiting" and natural cures.  Statistically, there were very poor results with natural cures compared to conventional treatment with early detection.

If you are in good health otherwise at age 67, you may consider a biopsy to find out if you really do have PCa.  My reasoning behind that is that you are concerned about health in general, hence your question about "natural cures or prevention."

You may wish to consider a conventional treatment, followed by a simple heart-healthy diet to give yourself the best shot with a one-two punch.

Keep thinking and asking... we'll be here and very interested in what you decide to do.

Also, I don't think it's appropriate for a new member's first post to be, essentially, a sales pitch for an unproven "remedy."

If you're attempting to persuade people to defer treatment of prostate cancer in favor of using this "medicine," I personally find that very dangerous advice.
